If you are the head coach of the Raiders (Al Davis) would you bench QB Jamarcus Russell until someone else proved that their sucktitude was greater?  The only thing I can think is Oakland pissed away so much money and such a high draft pick that they're gonna keep Russell at the helm.

Here's a sweet post I found on the topic.

Personally, I wouldn't give two rat's asses how much anyone is getting paid, or where in the draft they were selected. If you suck THAT bad and are costing the team wins, you aren't playing. Dude should have been benched a while ago. Damn, the Raiders suck.

Yeah, I guess I put too much value on pay versus performance--all those years on drafting for a franchise in Madden.

Now THIS is a young QB that's probably not going to make it in the league (paying attention, Tepop?).  If I were running the show in Oakland, I'd bring in a veteran QB to groom the kid and warn Russell that he will not see the field until he starts putting the work in to turn into a real QB.  The accounts I've read say he's lazy.  Maybe a veteran QB and some tough love would do him some good.

I can't really say I'd play the other 2 guys on the roster though...I'd go get some old vet (like Garcia before they messed up and cut him) under the understanding that his main role would be to mentor.

It would help if he had some real financial incentive to put in some hard work. That's the problem with a lot of these glamor picks high in the first round; they've never actually had to REALLY work for it.

If I were a scout, I'd recommend my team stay far away from the lazy type. Give me someone with a great work ethic and a slightly worse college performance every time.

It's a lot harder to get players to stop being lazy than it is to get them to straighten out their off-the-field antics, yet these behavioral issues get much more attention on draft day.

The guy couldn't hit a drive-in screen standing 5 feet from it. The Raiders are a joke! I knew he was a disaster when they drafted him.

Watch what Al Davis does. he'll make a deal with the devil and send Darren McFadden to NE for one seventh round draft pick and a guy like Julian Edelman who he thinks will be the next Fred Bilentkoff and NE will make a run at two more Super Bowls.

For a guy who got screwed on the Tuck Play, he sure likes stocking NE with talent.

The only person on Da Raiders who needs to be benched is Al Davis.

Russell sucks.  Bad.

I don't know how his contract is set up, but I would consider just cutting him and moving on if it could save you money.  It's one thing to totally suck, with the promise of one day being great (like rookie growing pains), but I don't see that with Russell.  What's the point of wasting any more time on him?

wow russell blows pretty bad as an nfl qb. i'd say though that drafting qb's for the nfl is such a crap shoot. you can have all the measurables and still they end up sucking. they talked just recently about the criteria parcells goes through in evaluating qb's. i remember hearing it and thinking it had some good points.

bellichick even said one year that if he was so smart that they would've drafted brady in the first round  Grin

definitely being lazy has to be one of the worst qualities though. you basically have to rely on word of mouth and do some serious due diligence to uncover facts to support that. if you really don't care, the amount of money you're getting probably doesn't help things much either.

Are you insinuating a possible Oakland / New England conspiracy / collusion between Al Davis and Bob Kraft? Smiley

Well, guess that benching worked.  Good for you, Raider Nation.
