What if Miami goes undefeated?

With all this talk about the colts and Saints losing and keeping the 1972 year alive. What would everyone think if Miami was in the shoes of the colts and saints. We always talk about other teams possibly going undefeated and not so much Miami, if they were to try to do it again.

The first team that reaches 19-0 perfection is going to take the majority of the media attention away from the '72 team from that point forward. A Miami Dolphins team doing it would wipe clean any local media attention residue that remained. The citizens of Perfectville might emotionally congratulate "another" perfect Miami team, but the emotions behind the tears would be a fairly complex recipe, imo.

Actually I think it would be rougher on the '72 team to have Miami do it than the other 31 teams.  If the team 72 team parades around like a-holes, opening rooting for Miami to lose they will allenate the only group of people who actually care for them (you).   So they will have to at least pretend to be supportive, but Morris won't be capable of doing that for long and will eventually mouth off.  The current dolphin players didn't grow up rooting for the 72 Dolphins, so they aren't gonna lick the 72 dolphins asses to the extent Shula and Morris expect them to.  I suspect if the Dolphins were to go 19-0, Morris would manage to say enough crap to make himself as unpopular in Miami as Farve is in Wisc.

I could not disagree more with the last two posts.

If another MIA team goes undefeated, the '72 team could (and, in my opinion, likely would) welcome them to the fraternity.  I don't see any problem with Mercury Morris splitting some bubbly with Ronnie Brown when the last undefeated team falls.  I do see a problem with any of the '72 Dolphins sharing the accomplishment with a different team.

Would the '72 team prefer to be the only ones on the board?  Sure.  But another Dolphins undefeated season is the best (or, least bad) possible outcome for them, since it will still be only the Dolphins that have completed an undefeated NFL championship.  The number of Dolphins that would be contacted by the media would increase, but it would still be a Dolphins-only affair.  If another non-Dolphins team is an undefeated champ, the '72 team immediately becomes irrelevant.

The most obvious manifestation of this would have been if the Shula/Marino Dolphins had went undefeated.  You mean to tell me that the '72 team would have preferred the Bears going undefeated to their former coach?

I totally agree here.   If it was another DOLPHINS team, the 72 team would be overjoyed and be partying with them into the long night.  Any other team, then what Sunstroke just described above would happen.

You have never actually heard them speak, have you?

They aren't fans of the Dolphins team, they are fans of themselves. 

You grew up your whole life as Dolphin fan.  Most of the team did not.  Mercury Morris didn't grow up a Dolphins fan, like Marino he was a Steelers fan as a kid.  He couldn't give two shits about the 2009 Dolphins.  He cares about Mercury.  And Mercury's legacy.

Yeah, he was a 49ners fan and rooted for Joe Montana.  And he thus he care a hell of a lot less about Grogan and Eason than I do. 

The '72 Dolphins want to be the only undefeated team.  They will be just as pissed if the Dolphins do it as any other team, but rooting against the current dolphins will allenate them from the only folks who don't already consider them whinny hasbeens.  So it will suck worse for them.

Exactly... I think some are either oversimplifying the human emotional equation, or just projecting their own expected response (as an outsider) as what they would expect from the members of the '72 team.

The 1972 would welcome with open arms any other Dolphin team that makes a run at perfection.

People jump on Mercury Morris but if Merc had not spoke up, the 72 team would have been buried in the consciousness of America. When they did go undefeated back then, it was hardly noticed because you didn't have ESPN and all this other stuff (Internet, etc). No one else would really speak up but Merc and Nick. Most of the guys on the 72 team really don't talk about it unless the press brings it up.

Current and former Dolphin players are a close knit family and they would celebrate the feat together.

I think that if Miami were to go undefeated again, it would only highlight the achievement of the 1972 team.  They would get parades out on the  field with every game down the stretch and they'd have a whole new series of TV ads about it and who knows what else.  It'd be great publicity for the old guys.
