Cheesy I didn't really mean each category...Those were just examples of what I thought a disaster movie would be...I could see aliens as a disaster movie....total annihilation type thing...

They did avert a disaster...wasn't some alien race about to blow up the earth if humanity didn't turn over the light of Xartha?<sp>

Killer Clowns from outer space

I have so much respect for you right now because of this movie reference...

Is Men in Black a disaster movie?

Think about it,they were chasing the bug who was trying to get the galaxy. The Arkillians threatened turn over the over the galaxy or we'll destroy our measly little planet..Because they're the Men in Black, no one knew what they did,and disaster was adverted

That was MIB 2 but you're right....

Hijack...I wish I would have done drugs while watching that movie....I could just imagine how scary that movie is while stoned,or really, really smashed....
End hijack

I think alot of movies are disaster movies....Some are thwarting some apocalyptic disaster, some show the apocalyptic moment, and some are post apocalyptic....Some aren't necessarily on an apocalyptic scale....A plane crash, a boat going down, the loss of a city,a ship in outer space....Being wrapped in a cotten candy cocoon, and having you bodily fluids drank out....

I always considered a disaster movie to be one where a disaster actually occurred.  If you're counting situations that are thwarted, then almost any movie is a disaster movie.

Watchmen (2009) is another good choice.

I am in the camp that a thwarted disaster does not count as a disaster movie.  In order to qualify, you have to have some sort of major bad things actually happen on screen.  You can stop the overall bad plan, but something pretty crappy still has to happen on a large scale.  Independence Day is a good example.  They stop the aliens in the end, but at first the aliens blow up some major cities.

Top Gun (1986)

Think About it - If it wasn't for Maverick coming back and blowing away all of those Mig 28's, the Russians would have attacked the United States and we would have engaged in World War 3 Smiley
