This is a bit of a head-scratcher for sure...

Injury prone, he was coming off an injury when we got him from San Fran and he has been injured both seasons with us!

Slow down.......they need to find someone to trade with first. Maybe the Big 3 has there eye on someone in the draft . I'm all for it.  Let Incognito play and let a Rookie play depth and learn how to Kick some ass behind him.

It simply all depends what they are able to get in trade for Smiley....if they can get a decent draft pick or player, it might be a good deal. I can't imagine they'd tell him not to report for workouts if something wasn't far along and near to completion.

Let's see how this shakes out.

Why not keep Smiley?  Competition is a good thing and decent o-line is a premium.  I don't agree with this move at all.  You're telling me you can't find one roster slot for a starting quality o-lineman heading into the draft and camp?

my feeling is that they know this roster is still full of holes, so they are trying to acquire another pick in a deep draft. smiley has some trade value, and was pretty much replaceable last year when he was out. garner filled the guard spot good enough.

salguero is saying in his latest blog post that the word on the street is they are looking for a third rounder.

I can't remember exactly what he costs, but I recall thinking he was kinda pricey.  He is a pretty good pulling guard but doesn't look nearly as impressive when he plays start to finish at the left guard spot.  To me, competition is better suited in the case where a young unknown is trying to take a starter's job.

This from the AFC East blog on ESPN...

"Sources have told Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald that the Dolphins' asking price is likely a third-rounder, and he tweeted some possible destinations on Monday afternoon: Atlanta, Seattle, Cincinnati and San Francisco. San Fran would be interesting, given that he started his career there."

Don't you kind of think there has to be somthing else to do with it? I mean, nothing seems to make sense on the surface.

How to put this?  If the Dolphins draft a left guard in the first round I am going to go insane.  You hear me?  Insane!  Don't trade a good LG to draft a first-round LG, when you have holes - not solid pros, but holes - at DT, FS, and WR!

Miami definitely has a lot more pressing needs than a LG upgrade, so I hope this speculation is just random dreaming... That said, Iupati is on the short list of guys I wouldn't mind the 49ers looking at with the second of their first round picks (#17). He's an absolute mauler, he WILL be a multiple pro bowl caliber player, and he definitely has that "elite left guard" upside, like a Steve Hutchinson type.
