Which player have we had here that played well, but not in a way that sells a lot of jerseys?  ...someone who is clutch, plays really well on special teams, blocks well, or plays a position that doesn't get a lot of press, but that matters.

Wes Welker, Larry Izzo, Patrick Cobbs, Jim Jensen -- these type of guys.

Only their time with Miami counts to the choice; it is not for their full body of work.

My choice is Reggie Roby.  I have never seen a Roby jersey, but I'd love to have one.  The guy bought us 10 yards on every change of possession...flipped the field for so long, but punter isn't a position where you get carried off the field.  I couldn't believe when we got rid of him.

I'm afraid that being a Midwest fan,the jersey part might make it hard....For many, many years...the only thing that made it locally were Marino jersey's.Even those were pretty limited (I'd never seen a white Dolphin jersey in person till a road trip to Dallas late 90's)  I have to show some love for one my faves....Keith Byars...

Earl Morrall, the best $100 Don Shula ever spent.

Bernie Parmalee.  Not bad for a UPS truck driver.

Would I get flamed if I said Ted Ginn Jr.?  Not only was he "unsung" but he was maligned.

I would like to give Lousaka Polite a nod for unsung hero.  I don't think this guy gets enough credit but he's a pretty damn good fullback.

Of the recent crop, I've always liked Patrick Cobbs.

While he might not be "unsung", I thought Pete Stoyanovich never got the credit he deserved.

Polite is a GREAT short-yardage back, but his blocking doesn't seem quite up to snuff.

Crash Jensen has to be the guy, imo... Unsung AND really productive. Also a helluva nice guy, from the radio and TV bits I've seen.

Lousaka Polite is more dallas garbage that ireland picked up.

Did you have a nominee of your own for this topic, or do you think that pissing on every thread with cracks about Henne/Sparano/Ireland sucking = quality contributions to the board?

I think Mare was one of those guys.  We got rid of him at just the right time, but he was damn near automatic for several years and could kick the ball through the uprights on kickoffs.

I think he is even more unsung because we have really been fortunate at that position as of late.  Feely had a solid year (or was it two) and Carpenter was really a suprise.  I think we are starting to take that position for granted.  But considering the amount of time Mare got the job done, I have to throw his name in the hat.

^^^ When you think about it the Kicker position is one that has been consistently good for the Fins.  Granted some were a little short on kickoffs, but as far as FG's go they have been pretty solid.

^^ I think there's a perfectly reasonable explanation for that....Kickers are probably the least "coached" players on the team.  Kickers are pretty much left on their own to practice, so it's pretty hard for coaching to either screw it up or make it better.  Not true of the other positions on the team.  I don't think it's any mystery why Miami hasn't had a winning team in the last 10 years, it's because their coaching overall has been in the bottom half of the league the whole time.  There may have been a couple times when it was slightly better, but it didn't last.

Until we actually get one of the top 10 coaching staffs in the league, Miami won't be consistently good.  It's my corollary theorem to the theorem that we won't be good until we get a great QB.  Get a great coaching staff and you'll find a great QB.  Don Shula got David Woodley to take the team to a SuperBowl.  If that don't prove that coaching makes the team go as opposed to the QB, then nothing does.
