No disrespect to Carmelo Anthony, who is a phenomenal player, but New Jersey got a "better player" than 'Melo today...landing the player I believe is the best PG in the NBA in Deron Williams.

They gave up Devin Harris and "high ceiling" rookie Derrick Favors...and at least one draft pick (looking for specifics on picks traded now), but how do you put a price tag on that sort of elite player, especially at one of the two most important positions on the floor (point guard and low post F/C).

Just boggled over this... and props to the Nets for making the right deal.

Edited to add:  According to a Chad Ford tweet, the Jazz are getting the Nets 1st round pick this year as well as Golden State's 2012 1st round pick in deal

Whether or not he is better than Carmelo is a matter of opinion, but the fact that he will play for anyone BUT New Jersey in 2012 is almost a fact. Almost.

Just think it's a bad trade for Jersey, not necessarily for what they gave up which is about market value, but because they don't need him. What does an awful, last placed team playing out it's final years in Newark want with an explosive point guard for a season and a half?

Almost as dumb as the Cavs trading for Baron Davis and his awful contract.

The day Rod Thorn left the Nets is the day the Nets  stopped being a respectable NBA franchise and went back to being a total joke they have been for most of their franchise's history.

I think the Nets made a good move.  If they didn't, they were a dead franchise.  And all the talk about him not signing is all way premature.  Nobody (including Williams) knows that to be true.  Players get traded, then they fit in somewhere, get along with management, and end up staying.

The Nets have not only landed a great player, but one at a position that is appealing to other free agents.  Good players want to play with a great PG that can get them the ball.  It could be a snowball effect that keeps the talent rolling into Jersey.

Nobody wants to go to NJ and play 2nd fiddle to the Knicks now that the Knicks are back at a respectable level. You don't see guys tripping over themselves to go play for the Clippers. Same here!  Williams just went to NBA Sibera. In a town where you have Melo and Amare making headlins. Where you have the Yankees, Jets, and Giants who all get MAJOR attention. Noboy will even know Williams is in the Tri-State area for the next 15 months in Newark, NJ playing on a team that "might" win 25 games a year in an empty arena!

Nobody will go there and play with him and he will force his way out of there a year from now. After watching how these other guys have done it, the blueprint has been laid.

I understand the Nets in a way, because what else are they supposed to do? NO ONE will go there as a free agent, so they have to do some drastic things, just as the Nationals did with Jayson Werth.

Still, maybe better to just hold onto those draft picks and try to move up in the draft and hope for the next Lebron.

Jayson Werth CHOSE to go there. Williams didn't. Big difference.

That's a great rant there, but I think I'll go with D-Will's take on D-Will's future, rather than your take on D-Will's future.

...from an ESPN report today:

"Deron Williams won't consider signing a contract extension with the Nets this summer. But the two-time All-Star said Thursday there is a "strong possibility" that he would eventually sign a new deal with New Jersey."

I would hope so. I will take any players opinion over yours as well. This is a mesage board, we all share opinions. That's why we are here  Roll Eyes

Bottom line, if he wanted to be in NJ, why not sign a MAX DEAL right now under THIS current CBA that is player-friendly. Why wait for the next CBA which probably won't be player friendly. Why you ask.....cause he doesn't plan on staying there.  Carmelo also said 2 weeks ago he wasn't against signing an extension in Denver. How did that turn out??! ha ha ha! In 2012 Williams will be in a big market somewhere, NOT New Jersey. My opinion, prediction and the thought shared by many many people

I hope Deron stays in NJ and attracts enough talent to make the Nets an interesting squad in the East. I don't believe they can put together a team that can compete for a title, even if that happens though. The NBA trend seems to be the clustering of superstars, creating a few "elite teams," and that doesn't bode well for teams that are "really good" but not elite.

I just pray that the Lakers don't get Dwight Howard...that shit keeps me up nights.

Me too, but for entirely different reasons. I would just love to see the Lakers get another center super star right out of Orlando.
