Reports are already out if the Cardinals are out if it early they will blow it up. And they have had discussions already with the Yanks about sending Chris Carpenter there and keeping that line of communication open.

^^The New York post talking about Chris is vastly different than "reports."

A lot would have to happen before Carpenter is moved, first and foremost his no-trade clause.  Secondly, his open in his desire in the past to stay in the National League.  Could it happen?  Sure.  He could also be dealt to the Dodgers, Giants, Braves or Rockies, four National League teams that Carpenter has stated he would waive his no-trade clause (and teams that should factor in the hunt and could stand to have a guy like Carp on their roster).

I am not ready to write off St. Louis just yet.  I seem to remember a couple teams that lost their ace early (1996 Yankees anyone?  One example) and went on to win.  One player a team does not make.  The thing about pitchers is that one or two always seem to come from nowhere and post great seasons.  St. Louis has some depth in this area in their system.  This will be a great chance for them to get guys like Shelby Miller or Seth Blair (someone I personally think has a ton of upside) some MLB looks.  St. Louis has five or six kids on the farm in AA and AAA that grade out at least in the B range, if not solid A.

Personally I don't like to toss dirt on any team's grave until the season actually starts.  Baseball has a way of never turning out the way you think it may.

Thank you Maine.  There are two people on this board who's baseball opinion I highly respect and you are one of them.  I was going to talk about Shelby Miller but you already mentioned him.  We have been eagerly anticipated his call up for a while now.  Injuries happen on every team, so don't assume a fire sale is going to happen.  Even here, the fans have their limits as to how much they will take.

Nobody is tossing dirt on the Cardinals grave. But if they are out if it early on, and they are looking ways to open up budget space to pay Puljos what he will want, I could see a bit of a fire sale in the early summer. And I didn't see the NY Post report, I was watching MLB Network and saw a couple insiders talking about the conversations between the Yanks and Cardinals

They shouldn't, that division stinks. Pirates stink. Cubs stink. Astros stink. The Cardinals at less than 100% and with an unhappy Puljos could still steal that division this year. The Brewers and Cincy will be tough but they aren't world beaters by any means.

The rest of the division is having a freaking party. The Cubs fans are being the worst followed by the Reds fans.  I don't think any other teams are afraid of the Cardinals, but I think a lot of fans of other teams hate them.

I don't think Pujols is unhappy.  If he was I think he would demand a trade.  He has always stayed away from talking anything else once he got down to baseball.  It's just the way he is.

^^^ And I'd break out the "you're joking, right?" if ya did... The Cardinals' record is overinflated right now, and at best, I'd notch them in at #4 or #5. That's still impressive though, considering that Wainwright's down, Pujols has spent much of the season hitting like Albert Brooks, Holliday is nicked up and they're using a backup closer.

Now that Rizzo is up with the Padres, I'm certain they'll jump to the top spot in short order. Wink

So, if you don't care how a team wins, as long as they win... How would you justify ranking a team #1 overall in the majors when they only have the fourth best record (tied for it, actually), and aren't even on top of their division?

Your initial comment was "St. Louis is - hands down - the best team in baseball.  If I were to do a Maine's PT right now they would be, far and away, the #1 squad."

I disagree... I think that, talent-wise, they aren't as good as two different teams in the AL East, and not as good as the Phillies in the NL.
