Great. Must be done! MLB plays the longest regular season but has the least amount of teams in their playoffs.

I heard Bud on SIRIUS radio a few weeks back. ONE idea is to add another WILD CARD team. Have 2 wild cards, they do a one-game playoff the day after the season ends. Team with better record hosts the game. Winner of that game, goes into a 5 game series with the higest seeded team (doesn't matter if its their own division rival or not) the very next day (NO OFF DAY). The break down of that first round series will be 4-1 with the highest seeded team getting 4 home games, and the wild card winner gets 1 (game 3).....this will prevent teams from laying down and giving up a division if they know they have the wild card locked up (like Yanks and Tampa did last year). PLUS it rewards the best team in each league and gives them an easier path in Round 1 which they earned over the long haul.

That is ONE idea being thrown around

More playoff baseball = good for fans. It's a no-brainer.  Grin

Now, about that hard salary cap...  Cry

I love the NHL playoffs, even more when the Rangers aren't there to humiliate themselves. However, I am not a fan of the format that half the league goes to the playoffs. I like the format the way it is right now. Maybe a tweak here or there, but adding 4 more teams? Not needed.

I don't like adding 2 teams.  Seems like a play-in series gives the other teams too much time off, and baseball is too circumstantial to play only 1 game.  One bad pitch, one great play, could make or break a team's season.  It should be a minimum 3 game series, and that gives the other 4 teams 4-5 days off.

Seeing as how off-time has affected teams in the past (Rockies of a few years ago), I don't know if its such a great idea.

But what do I know...?

It wasn't the off time that affected the Rockies, it was karma for that team stealing the Padres rightful playoff spot.

(dammit-dammit-dammit...I thought I was past that. My therapist even said I've made great progress)

I like more teams.  MikeO covered my thoughts pretty well.  For as long as the season is, it's nice to have meaningful games for more teams down the stretch.

I also agree with Brian, however, that there should be a 3 game minimum for a series.

Add a hard floor and MAKE every franchise carry AT LEAST a 65 million dollar payroll and I am in.  Until then...

Bad idea.  One game playoff is terrible, 3 game playoff would stretch the season further into November.  I really don't relish seeing World Series games played in the snow.  The only way I would go for it is if they shaved 20 games off the regular season, which most teams would be against.

I have no problem with a hard floor as well, though your $65 million figure seems a little bit random to me. Can I ask what sort of formula you used to arrive at that figure?

Until then...

Until then, you'll continue exploiting an unfair system by outbidding other teams for talent. The status quo works great...when you've got the status.

a hard floor would be great. But $65 is way too low. Would need to be around $80 or so. Must force teams to field a competitive team
