Royal blue might have been common before, but navy blue is the new black now.  I think the only teams that still use royal blue (excepting the Bills) are the Colts and the Giants.

Royal blue might have been common before, but navy blue is the new black now.  I think the only teams that still use royal blue (excepting the Bills) are the Colts and the Giants.

So only 10% of the league? And since we're not talking about which *current* uniform it looks like, the current status is pretty much irrelevant anyway.

But since you brought it up, what teams use navy blue currently? The Bills actually switched AWAY from it with their new unis. (I'm having to look this up, of course):

Seahawks: "Seahawks blue", with Navy trim and pants.
Bears: "Dark Navy". I'd actually forgotten about them, despite ALWAYS having been Navy.
Cowboys: Navy. Switched from Royal to "Dark Blue" for the '97 season and then to Navy in '02.
Broncos: "Broncos Navy". Switched away from Royal for the '97 season.
Lions:  "Honolulu Blue". "It's the kind of blue, I am told, that will match with silver." (Lions VP and GM at the time, who chose the color.)
Texans: "Deep Steel Blue". Not quite Navy, but close to my untrained eye.
Chargers: Navy and "Powder Blue". Added their Powder Blue's in '07.
Colts: Royal Blue.
Patriots: "Nautical Blue" (since 2000). They couldn't be bothered to just call it Navy? Really?
Giants: "Dark Blue". Looks pretty much like Royal Blue to me.
Titans: Navy and "Titans Blue".

The conclusion of this little excursion: Navy dominates and has for a long time. There was a switch away from Royal Blue about 10-15 years ago (which matches up well with what you said).

The Lions' Honolulu Blue looks a lot like the Powder Blue of the Chargers... which is pretty much just baby blue, IMHO Wink. The same with "Titans Blue".

The Seahawks, who used to be royal blue, are going with a new uniform design in 2012, coinciding with the switch to Nike. Hopefully, they'll at least get rid of the nauseating green.

Another completely irrelevant historical tidbit: The Colts actually had Navy and White uniforms for a couple of years way back in the 50s.

What would we consider the Dolphins blue? I have heard it called navy, but it looks a different shade to me personally.

Officially, it's Navy, but considering that it's only used for two pencil-thin stripes on the helmet and a bit of shadow on the numbers, there's just not a big enough patch of it that I can tell if its any different than all the other dark blues. If it weren't for the official colors naming it, I wouldn't even have known that it wasn't black. Looks black on the jersey I have and the very, very dark blue on the cap (or maybe slightly faded black).

I am assuming we are talking about more than just the main color of the jersey itself based on the fact that the words "Navy trim" were included in the post.

In fairness, all the teams listed have some kind of blue as a "main" color.

Are we really going to pick this question apart?

I'd say the Lions are electric blue:

the Titans are sky blue:

and the Panthers are cyan:

Spider, your color samples don't match the material I have.

Anyway, the names I used above are the official team color names. IMHO, they are often rather dumb. "Panther Blue" for the light blue of the Panthers, for example. I'd certainly argue that it's hardly CYAN. If we're talking RGB color composition, it has much less green in it than cyan has.

I'm not sure those palettes are accurate.  What is the source for that?

It's from ColorWerx, formerly known as the Society for Sports Uniforms Research:

http://www.ssur.org/research/TeamColors/Football_Outdoor/NationalFootballLeague/NationalFootballLeague.htm

A couple of things regarding colors on monitors: Almost no monitors are even REMOTELY correctly calibrated to display colors accurately. It's really, really bad. And that's disregarding the poor color capabilities of a lot of LCD monitors in the first place (especially TN panels). Then there's the issue of gamma correction and, for photos, lighting. All of it makes it pretty nigh impossible to compare an RGB value from one source to the shirt color from a photo.

These guys at SSUR seem like they've put a lot of effort into what they're doing, so I'm going to assume their colors are at least "internally consistent". Sticking with them as a source, here are 10 teams with blueish colors:

EDIT: The colors from "my" source don't seem to be all that far from the jerseys you posted... just by eyeballing, anyway.

The Dolphins' blue is navy.

I used to have this jersey,  I wonder why they never used this alternate color scheme
