Agreed it is a big risk, but maybe if you're ever going to gamble on a guy, this is the guy.  Hell they gambled on Ricky who couldn't stay away from the weed, and announced in on TV.  At least Marshall seems like a safer wager with bigger up-side.

Its a big risk to keep a huge guaranteed salary, but you're assuming he gets cut next year.  Given the fact that his salary is guaranteed, the chances of him getting cut for salary-dumping reasons next year, or any year before 2014, is pretty slim.

I truly feel that Marshall has been working hard in the offseason, showing that he's better than his mediocre numbers last season.  I wanna give him a second chance to prove that last year was a fluke...

this is NOT the guy I would gamble on. He has too many skeletons in his closet and too much "DRAMA" around him at all times.

I believe there was a comment on another thread about passing judgement on people.

Agreed way to early to think about parting with the best player on our team. Prior to last season this guy was considered one of the best WR in the game and you know what.....I think he still is. So he had a down year with a new team BFD. I bet he comes out with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove this year and returns to that same status.

She stabbed him in the stomach, so it's probably a rib that has the chip. Wink

Why do some people put such a big emphasis on "character" for BALL PLAYERS.  This guy isn't performing brain surgery on me or going to court for me.  He catches a f***ing ball for a living!  I don't give a shit if he picks terrible girlfriends; why would we get rid of him if he's the best BALL CATCHER we have?

Locker-room cancer yadayada... I get it.  This dude hasn't given me any indication he's a grade A douche like T.O.  As long as he produces whatver happens off field I couldn't care any less.

He is actually MUCH worse than T.O. And its not even close!

Teams filled with multiple bad character guys in the NFL these days dont' win. With social media, TMZ, 24/7 coverage of everything....if a team has a  bunch of bad character guys they will implode.

You don't need a bunch of alter boys, but you can't have a bunch of guys who are getting stabbed, getting poped for DUI's, beating their wife/girlfriend, rape charges...etc. Teams with a bunch of bad character guys don't win in this league. And to have one be the highest paid or 2nd highest paid guy on your team....GOOD LUCK! That is just insane! And some guys (like Marshall) are involved with something all the time. It never ends! Either he is getting stabbed, getting shot at, quitting on the Broncos, acting like a 4 year old during practice, throwing the ball around on the field after plays getting 15 yard penalties for no good reason, multiple arrests for domestic violence.  To invest big bucks and major portion of the salary cap in a guy like that is crazy. Marshall was given a 2nd chance after Denver, in one year.....HE HAS FAILED! Time to move on. We won't, but we should. And it will cost Sparano his job and maybe Irleand's when all is said and done

So when you talk about "bad character guys," and specifically reference DUIs, does Hines Ward count?  (If not, I'm extremely interested in hearing why Ward's DUI is excusable but Ronnie's single DUI automatically qualifies him as one of the worst character players in the league, according to you.)  Does being voted the dirtiest player in the NFL count as a "bad character" guy?  How about being arrested on sexual assault charges and subsequently being suspended by the league?  Or getting in a motorcycle accident (without a helmet!) when you don't even have a valid motorcycle license?  What about a player that is continually being fined for illegal hits, threatened to retire over rule changes, and gave a print interview where he throws their own team members under the bus?  Do those count as "bad character guys"?

Because it seems to me that PIT was in the Super Bowl last year and won it three years ago, with some of their most important players on BOTH sides of the ball having several character issues.  That seems to make your "bad character" criteria a complete fabrication.

Pittsburgh is the exception not the rule.

Go root for them if you want to root for a  bunch of criminals.

Can I root for them if I want to root for a team that prioritizes winning over being model citizens?

1/16/2009   Jonathan Vilma       New Orleans   LB      Arrested, charged with resisting arrest and reckless driving in Miami.   Charges dropped in exchange for $1,000 donation to charity and agreement to clear up outstanding tickets.
5/20/2008   Charles Grant       New Orleans   DE      Indicted on a charge of involuntary manslaughter stemming from a Feb. 3 nightclub altercation. 2/13/2008   Antonio Pierce       N.Y. Giants   LB      Summons issued for charge of neglecting one of his pit pulls.   Pleaded guilty, $1,300 fine

I'll be happy to go back further if you need me to really pound this point home.  (Indy, in particular, is a gem.)

And the case against Marshall's wife was dropped due to "conflicting evidence".
