Quote
Tyler Thigpen will reunite with Chan Gailey in Buffalo, giving the Bills another overlooked and underrated veteran quarterback option.

A league source tells PFT that Thigpen agreed to a three-year deal with Buffalo.  The Vikings were also involved in heavy discussions with Thigpen, but ultimately the former seventh-round pick of the Vikings chose the Bills instead.

Yes, it appears Donovan McNabb was the backup plan to Thigpen.

Thigpen was highly productive in Kansas City under Gailey despite an unstable situation around him.  (He threw 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 2008 and made some incredible plays with his feett.)

Ryan Fitzpatrick is the clear starter, but Thigpen gives Buffalo another athletic option that knows Gailey’s system.  Thigpen is big upgrade from Brian Brohm, who was Fitzpatrick’s backup last year.

I disagree with both adjectives used... "underrated" and "overlooked."

Now, if Fitzpatrick can get hurt by November, Miami could very well face both Tyler Thigpen and John Beck this season.

I was just thinking that. Tyler Thigpen's W/L record as a starter is abysmal. At some point, you can't say "The teams were bad". It's something like 2-15, right? That's Ryan Leaf territory.

Buffalo has Wannstedt so they have no need for a QB. Anyone can hand off three times and punt.

knowing our luck, Thiggy will come back and beat us some time late in the season.

BUF definitely overpaid for this one.  still love the Devlin pick-up.

I also disagree with "Highly effective". With 18 TDs and 12 Ints, I would let "effective" get by, but the bar is much higher if you want to say he was "highly" effective.

Looks like I'm the only one that thinks that letting Thiggy get away is a mistake, ha ha.

Not the only one.  Thiggy was a very good backup on a crapy team (the Chiefs) and injury ridden team (Dolphins).  We have been round and round on this but I truly believe he has what it takes to be a good starter.

He isn't cerebral like a Peyton Manning, but he has a good physical skill set and a killer instinct.  He is more of a Favre or Romo type QB.  I think he can win with a good team around him and definitely think he would be fun to watch.  Give the guy some true offseason work, practice reps and a team on the rise and I feel good about his chances of proving the naysayers wrong.

Ultimately, this makes the Orton or Kolb deal more important.  If Henne can't turn it around we are very much screwed without a good veteran.  Even a veteran has some issues to overcome with the lack of a true off season.  Devlin and any future draft pick would really set us back a few years.  So for now we have to trust in Henne, how does that make you feel?

It just irritates me that Thigpen is staying in division.  I don't blame him because it is a decent shot to start and the coach is very QB friendly.  Thigpen has a skill set and unpredictability level that would drive us nuts if we face him.  Only time will tell, but I do have some concerns over this move.

I am having trouble understanding the Ryan Leaf comparison.

I doubt he is getting paid a lot of money, he was initially a 7th round pick, and the Bills are signing him to be the backup or 3rd string QB.  Leaf OTOH was the 2nd pick overall in the draft.

He is a decent choice for a backup.  A team could do worse.

Never cared for Thiggy one way or the other so I am not sad to see him go and I wish him luck.
