You were just granted the newest MLB franchise, and you can start a franchise with any MLB player right now....Who would you start your franchise with?

Man, oh man...part of me wants to go with the most talented young rising star pitcher out there, and part of me wants to go with the most talented young rising star hitter out there.

So, basically, I'd flip a coin between Stephen Strasburg and Desmond Jennings.

A five-tool centerfielder or a pitcher with a 98mph fastball and a slider that snaps off at a right angle.

Trying to decide between Strasburg and Arroldis Chapman.... but Chapman would be in my starting five.

Pitching wins games.

As much as I hate the Yankees,it would have to be Jeter. His talent, work ethic, and leadership would not only make him the best player on any new team but a solid mentor for any of the younger players that you would have around.

I am a Yankee fan and I wouldn't say Jeter. I wouldn't say Jeter with my 75th pick either. He is 37, his best years are behind him.

You obviously have to go with good, but you have to go with young as well. I would go with pitching as pitchers can singlehandedly start or stop winning/losing streaks. Either Strasburg or Clayton Kershaw. Probably Kershaw as Strasburg already has Tommy John and you just never know how pitchers will react to that.

I'd have no problem with Kershaw either, the guy is a monster. If I had to, I'd probably consider David Price too...he's turning into a strikeout machine.

...and Jeter is definitely too old to be the "first player" to build a franchise around. Nothing but respect for the guy, but he just isn't the answer to this particular question.

If I were picking one Yankee to build around, it'd be Cano...and even he may be too old (28).

I honestly went blank when I was talking with my co workers about this.....So I asked here.... Grin

I really like Kershaw,I'd still think really hard about taking Felix Hernandez (25)

If I had a position player, I'd consider Matt Kemp (I really like Mike Stanton, and Andrew Mccutchen though)

^^^ Nice!

If you could take one arm and one bat...I'm guessing Lilly would be joined by Vlad Guerrero or Travis Hafner, right? Grin

Strasburg looked so good last night...I almost forgot about Desmond Jennings.

I'm not a big baseball person, but I can't wrap my head around building a franchise around a player that plays every 5th day. (Pitchers).

I think you have to build a team around a big offensive threat either in his prime or right before his prime who can hit for both power and average. Alex Rodgriguez from 6-7 years ago would have been the perfect guy to do just that.

What about that Josh Hamilton guy from Texas? Is he young enough? Does he have the credentials enough?

^^My answer, about taking a pitcher..(I'm not sure if it's the right answer, but it's the way I see it). You can't have enough pitching, and It's kind of hard to find that number 1 top of the rotations guys, especially a young one...I could hand him the ball and I'd be fairly confident that I had a good chance of winning every 5th day.

Where if I took 1 great position player,he can play everyday, but also be taken out of the game offensively ,(intentionally walked, pitched around)...Easier to neutralize...

It's just my take...

I agree with Lil_B's take on the stud #1 starter. When you have a guy like Halladay, Sabbathia, Kershaw, etc... at the top of your rotation, it really helps. Get 3 mondo-stud starters in your rotation, and you're ready to dominate the playoffs.
