Although he hadn't played in 2yrs Allen played better than Sapp IMO... if anything they should have kept Allen and put Carroll on the practice squad... he needs work!

The danger with putting players on practice squad is that they might not clear waivers and even after that, they can be signed away at any time.

Anyway, Carroll wasn't eligible after having played in 13 games last year.

I'm not trying to be a downer, hey great Will Allen didn't get sucked up by Dallas or NE,but I'm concerned that he's not been able to stay healthy the past 2 years...We might be right back to square one.... Undecided

He was a starter when he got injured right?   Maybe playing the nickle back will help him stay healthy...

Even if he can give us 4-5 games, it gives a guy like Wilson a little time to learn the position.  Good move, and one that had to be made.  The reduced off-season really hurt us in evaluating this position adequately before the start of the season.  Sapp had me fooled a bit too this preseason.  I thought he had improved and apparently I was wrong.

Still, I am mostly happy about the move.  Allen can play inside and is definitely a better backup outside than Carroll at this point.  Carroll may just need a little more time, or he may just be too slow, we will see.

Only two problems with Allen - consistency has dropped off and obviously the injury has lingered more than anyone imagined.  I just hope he doesn't become a penalty machine out there.  It looked like he was a little more willing to hold a guy or make contact past 5 yards than in the past to compensate for some of his drop off.  But who else is out there?  And I am always in favor of a guy who already knows the defense over a guy learning.

With 4.3 40 speed... speed is not Carroll's problem!  But 4.6 speed might have been what really hurt Sapp...

He may have run that at the combine, but I don't see it on the field.  I am sure you feel the same way that there is a big difference in speed and game speed.  I have seen enough of him on the field to see that he is playing slow.

I think it's more him not really knowing what's going on than speed!  No one has ever complained about his speed on the field in College or now in the pros... but he does have that deer in the headlights of a tractor trailer look!

On that 99 yd TD Welker really exposed Sapp's lack of speed!   Welker is quick not fast and he ran away from Sapp easily!

The more disturbing part of the whole thing for me is that if the Dolphins have such a glaring lack of depth in the secondary, how many other areas of this team are just one injury away from being another disaster position?

I agree that Will Allen is better than what we have now....I hope we continue to churn for another corner....

Excuse me for my baseball hijack...
(This really reminds me of the Cubs starting pitching at the beginning of the year...We thought we were deep there, someone under performed (went postal) and got cut,a couple of injuries...and suddenly we sucked ass....)

The problem is they don't have a back up plan to a lot of the stuff they're doing...  Huh

Guess it depends on how you're looking at it. We already KNOW that Sapp got stiff-armed and burned by a guy who is about as small as receivers come, and not particularly fast. We DON'T know how good/bad his replacement will be, but we can realistically prseume whoever it is won't get torched for 99 yards. -EK

What does this say about our front office.  They had all last season and this preseason to evaluate him, and they cut him 1 game into the year after his salary is guaranteed?

The problem is they don't have a back up plan to a lot of the stuff they're doing...  Huh

Overall, I agree with these sentiments expressed here, and it has me kinda worried.   Undecided

I mean, you can say what you want about it being Week 1 and against the Patriots and the lockout and such, but seriously, into their fourth season now, I'm beginning to seriously question these guys (I'm looking at you, Ireland, every bit as much as Sparano) and what the hell they're thinking.  Like others have noted, the bottom third of the roster turnover has been particularly bothersome (and we all know it showed in the special teams' *performance* early into last season!) as well as what the hell they've been thinking with the offensive line.  Supposedly it's their expertise--well, if you think so, pay somebody!  I'm all for building a team through the draft like perennials like the Steelers and Packers and teams like that have been doing, but after drafting the Shawn Murphy's and the Donald Thomas's and the John Jerry's of the world and getting absolutely nowhere with that to the point we have to move our decent RT to one of the guard poisitions and depend on Richie Incognito at the other, and then signing players like Jake Grove and Joe Berger at center.

I'm glad they drafted Pouncey and I think he'll turn out fine, but good Lord if it isn't bothersome when this regime only seems to hit it right on their first round drafted offensive linemen (Pouncey [hopefully] and Jake Long, of course).  I guess what I'm saying is just pay someone (preferably young, up-and-coming) if they're even out there at the interior OL position, because I think it's gotten to the point where we almost have to acknowledge that past Round 2 or maybe 3, these guys haven't exactly been the best talent evaluators.  It pains me to say that, but it seems like it's the case.  I guess OL sticks out the most because I feel like we, as fans, were led to believe that this regime would at least build us up from the inside out (which I concur is the most important way to do it other than also having a solid QB), and I really feel like they've missed the boat on the offensive line, and I'm beginning to wonder if they've done the same on the defensive front as well, though I must admit that's probably over-reaction for the time being, and I need to give that time.  But I was so disappointed at the lack of push and such the front 3 was able to manage against a faily banged up (Vollmer from the start, Koppen by the 2nd quarter) and new (Brian Waters) Pats' o-line.  Overall, the defense just kinda embarassed me as to what I was thinking (or maybe hoping is the better way to state it) that they would be this season.

I guess I'll just have to bank on the belief that a lot of this was a result of the lack of offseason training and preparation because like several others have noted, we weren't the only solid or great 2010 defense to look porous this past weekend.  It sucks that we weren't as well-prepared or conditioned as our opponent, but I'm hoping that was the case after the fact!  Embarrassed

I might be way off here... but I was kinda disappointed we didn't bring in Bryant Mckinnie to see what he could do for us...  He had a good game against the Steelers!    I thought with Jake at LT Mckinnie at RT we might have had a decent O-line?
