I am glad that I have a lot of Florida Marlins stuff if that's the crap they're going with. I'll be rocking the "retro" look

Regarding the black background... if you insist on having WHITE letters for the team name, a dark background is hard to avoid, so black is a team color in this case. You can't have the logo without it.

The "Marlins" in the new logo is surrounded by orange.  You'd be able to read it perfectly fine on a white background, just like you can read that Dolphins logo.

Even if that wasn't the case, you can throw white letters on a cyan or orange background and you're still fine.

That is atrocious.....I for one don't like it but I am not a Marlins fan so I don't really care either.

The Marlins in the new logo has a pencil-thin outline, not nearly enough to make it easily readable -- so nothing like the Dolphins logo.

And you can't just use cyan or orange as you suggest, since that would ruin the rest of the logo.

Looks fine to me.

Are you seriously arguing that black is the ONLY color that can EVER be used for the background of the new Marlins logo?

I wasn't talking about the phins logo, so completely irrelevant.

Do note that the two phins logos you showed differ by more than just the background. The latter one has en extra white outline around everything.

No, what I am saying is that the logo, as is, needs a dark background. White looks like shit unless you really beef up the outline and using one of the colors in the logo ruins the rest of the logo (IMHO).

Examples:

This is a quick and dirty edit (so ignore the inexact nature of it) and I've purposely left in too much black from the outline.

The orange is actually quite nice, although very Dolphins-like, but ruins the marlin. As with you Dolphins-logo example, adding some white around the marlin could "save" it (but that would be modifying the logo beyond the background color).

The problem for me is the giant "M". It's the biggest part of the logo and is very generic looking.

I chopped up the logo just to see what it would look like, and I think this looks a lot better.

Forgive my shoddy Photoshop skills...

^^^ For an ice cream parlor brand...sure. For a theme park logo...you betcha.

For a major league baseball team? Gag me with a spork full of rainbow sherbet.

I'm with 'stroke. Too many colors for the logo of a sports team.

I found this while google searching a better version of the logo....I had worked on an idea that essentially used what the parts of the new logo, using the old colors..I kept Effin up the marlin...It was more 3d,less straight on,but bringing it all together more like the Colorado Avalache logo..

I lost it all when I re-imaged my hard drive back to September 1st....

^ I think that actually looks pretty cool.

My only gripe is that I think that the Marlin itself (as opposed to the M), should have either the white or yellow included, as well.

It would be so much better if they just got rid of the multi-colored outline around the M
