The Indy/NE rivalry wasn't hurt by moving divisions, though.  That rivalry is stronger than it's ever been, and that came after realignment.

True but imagine how much bigger it would have been had they remained in the same division, playing twice a year.

I'd be much more in favor of this if we went back to 3 divisions per conference instead of 4.

AFC EAST
NE, NYJ, Miami, Baltimore, Jacksonville, Buffalo

AFC Central
Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Tennesee

AFC West
Denver, SD, KC, Oak, Houston

NFC EAST
NYG, Philadelphia, Carolina, Washington, TB, Atlanta

NFC Central
Minn, Chicago, GB, Detroit, St. Louis

NFC West
Seattle, SF, Arizona, Dallas, NO

^^^ That just begs for two expansion teams. And I see you've nicely left room for an LA team ;-)

Deep down I was thinking 4.  NFC West: LA, NFC CENTRAL: Oklahoma City.  AFC Central: Birmingham AFC West: Utah

Hahah... Yeah, I just did a 36-32=2. That's impressive...

6 teams per division was of course what I meant. Maybe I should look into getting some tuition money back Wink

6 teams per division would require an 18 game schedule.

It didn't from 99-01, when there were 6 teams in the AFC Central.

You're presuming that the schedule must be as logical and well-crafted as it is now.  It wasn't in the past, and it doesn't necessarily have to be so in the future.  That being said, the 4x4 division scheduling is one of the single best management accomplishments in the history of pro sports (IMO), which alone is enough to immediately disregard any talk of realignment back to 3-division conferences.
