Jets have never beaten the Eagles hopefully this weekend the streak remains.

I can't see any reason it wouldn't. Sanchez has looked better this year than I thought he would, and he's getting a lot out of his receivers. There's no longer a "need" to ground and pound. -EK

Are you serious? He's been atrocious at times, although luck and a few hot streaks have resulted in stats that aren't terrible. He had one point a few of weeks ago where he threw five straight passes into the hands of the opposing team -- only one was intercepted, through no fault of his own.

Of course, if your expectations were sufficiently low, I can see how you could have been positively surprised.

I guess maybe my expectations were low. Coming into the season I felt like Henne had more upside than Sanchez. I don't think that anymore. If you look at his numbers, every year his TDs, completion percent, and rating have improved, if I'm not mistaken. I honestly thought he would take a step back this year, so yeah my expectations were not great. They have also been winning more because of him, and less because of the ground game this year than previously. -EK

Sanchez is having the worst year of his career. It goes beyond the numbers he has given teams that have no business being in games with them a chance to win or win (ie Denver game).  And until last week he was having so bad of a month there was talk of the Jets trying to get Petyon Manning when he is a FA and possibly moving in a different direction. I still think Sanchez going forward as a player will do very well in the NFL, he is very good. But this hasn't been his year. He still has time to salvage the season though with a strong finish and playoff run.

Mike I swear I don't go out of my way to look for things to argue with you about, but Sanchez is having the best year of his career. He's going to finish with career highs in yards, TD's, completion %, QB rating, already nearly doubled his career high in rushing TD's and has a career low in INT's. I'm not sure there's a single QB stat he HASN'T improved on this year. How is this a "bad year" for him? -EK

He lost the Broncos game by himself by throwing the pick-6 that gave Denver life when the Jets had the game in hand. Vs the Bills at home he was god awful till the last drive. He was like 15-37 or something. Buffalo has been terrible for about 7 weeks now, the only good game they played was because Sanchez let them stay in that game. Sanchez was terrible vs Washington as well, till the last drive. Threw for like 160 yards. Everyone has killed Washington this year, not Sanchez though.

Mark's good games this year have been huge. His bad games have been really bad. It's more than just numbers. Numbers don't always tell the story

MikeO, you may not be aware, but (apparently due to the Tebow thread) EKnight is now on the Sanchez bandwagon.

2 straight AFCC games (and 4 road playoff wins) didn't do it, but apparently, losing to DEN and beating the powerhouse trio of BUF/WSH/KC has won EKnight over.  Sanchez is now legit.

EKnight, I commend you for your commitment to consistency, misplaced as it may be.

I still think Henne has more upside than Sanchez.  It doesn't say much for Henne though because Sanchez couldn't hit water if he fell out of a fucking boat.  Sanchez happens to be on a better team.  That's the only difference.

You're fixating on (primitive) stats and not watching him play. I've had the misfortune of watching most of his games this year and he's been incredibly lucky not to throw A LOT more interceptions. He's also been very "streaky", showing some really nice play at times (often when it didn't matter) after long stretches of bad play.

You are wrong, by the way, that he has a career low in INTs. He had 13 last year in 16 games. Through 13 this year, he's at 11. He's also lost 6 fumbles (up from 1 last year and 3 in year 1). His YPA is also (very slightly) lower than in his first year.

Anyway, all those stats don't show how many interceptions opposing defenses have dropped. He lead the league in that particular area of luck last year (unlike year 1) and looks to be up there again this year. The net result is that if he'd had average luck this year and last year, he would've thrown as many interceptions as he did his first year.

If you look at ESPN's Total QBR or Football Outsiders DVOA, he's 29th and 20th, respectively. That's HORRIBLE. And neither of those consider the massive luck he's had with opposing defenses dropping easy interceptions.

Edited to add: I'm actually not as negative on Sanchez as it sounds. He clearly shows streaks of extremely good play. He still plays with a lot of confidence and as long as he has that and a decent team around him, he has a good chance of becoming a quality quarterback.

So total yards, number of TD's, completion %, and QB rating are "primitive stats?" That's great, lol! I'll have to remember that for the Tebow thread. My stance is that he's not having the worst year of his career. His numbers will pan out that he's having the best year of his career statistically. How many stretches of "bad play" can he be having if the team is 8-5 and his numbers-overall- are the best of his career? I'm not claiming he's a Pro Bowler or anything like that, but he HAS improved every year he's been in the league, even if it's only a little bit. Even if you disagree with that, do you honestly believe he's worse this year than either of the previous two?? Not likely. -EK

They are simplistic in that they don't take into consideration if stuff is happening in garbage time etc. There's a reason passer rating is the metric used when comparing quarterbacks and not yards, ypa, touchdowns/interceptions, or whatever. It's the only advanced metric with wide usage, although ESPN has been attempting to introduce one with their QBR.

He isn't having his best year now in a lot of metrics. You said "I'm not sure there's a single QB stat he HASN'T improved on this year"... and I was simply providing you an answer to your uncertainty.

As for your ability to predict the future. That's nice.

His passer rating is better than before, but several other numbers are down. Like I said, though, WATCH HIM PLAY. Or, if you don't want to do that, look at some advanced metrics like ESPN's QBR or Football Outsiders' DVOA.

Quote

I think his "highs" are above what I saw last year, but those streaks are at least as far apart as last year. Like I said, he's been EXTREMELY lucky with opponents dropping interceptions. That doesn't show up in the stats, but it's very relevant when it comes to evaluating his performance. Overall, I'm not sure he's really improved much at all from last year. Overall.

If I were the HC, I'd consider replacing their QB coach, Matt Cavanaugh. Sanchez has shown the ability to play at a very high level, but he's interspersing it with so much crappy play that it's no surprise that advanced metrics (like QBR and DVOA) have him as the 20-something'th best quarterback in the league. And those metrics don't even include the ridiculous interception luck he's had. I'm not kidding when I say he could just as easily have TWICE as many INTs as he has.

I have no idea what you're arguing. No one is comparing him to any other QB in the league except you. Every metric I pointed out is a valid way of assessing him because I am comparing him to HIMSELF. Let me make it simpler for you- it's a straight forward "yes" or "no" question. Mike said he's having the worst season of his career. I disagreed. Yes or No- is he playing worse than either of his previous years? If you say yes, that's your opinion and it's fine. I disagree and feel he's playing better than the previous two years. At the moment, his stats, play, and the team record back that up. That's my opinion, and guess what? It's OK, too. Repeatedly nit-picking and arguing a point that no one is making doesn't make you more right. -EK
