Brees new single season passsing mark

From a Dolphin perspective:  it goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway, that the rules are set up to favor passing in the current NFL.  The fall of the record was inevitable.
And I'm very happy Drew Brees beat the record.  Been pissed he wasn't a Dolphin ever since Wanny didn't draft him.  Jamar Fletcher was awesomely craptacular.

From another Dolphin perspective:  It's interesting that Brees' former San Diego teammate, Darren Sproles, was on the receiving end of that TD pass...because he was the guy who replaced Reggie Bush in that offense.  Still, I'm sure Bush is congratulating Drew tonight.

Congrats to Drew Brees, and before it's all said and done, maybe Tom Brady.  As people kept approaching this record over the last 10 years, I was sure it would fall eventually.

I certainly don't mean to dimish what Brees has done.  However, it does need to be said that today's NFL is way more heavily weighted to passing than it used to be.

Is it just me, or is this record kinda brushed off?  Nobody seems to really care.  The media is barely recognizing it.

As a Dolphins fan, I'm only like 3% upset that another one of Marino's records is gone.  Before Marino broke all the records, Fran Tarkenton had almost every record in the book.  Does his name EVER get brought up with the with greatest QB's ever conversation?  I'll bet on no.  My point is, MAYBE now the media can stop putting every QB to play in Miami under a microscope.  MAYBE now we're not looking to the "successor" to Marino.  Do I want Marino to be irrelevant?  F*ck no.  He is one of the best to ever play the game.  Just stopppppppp with the talk of "finding Marino's replacement"  or "finding the next Dan Marino" 


It's like Marino has a curse over the Dolphins QB position.  Maybe as each record falls, there's less as less pressure to "fill the big shoes" left by Marino and we can actually get a serviceable QB.

Fran Tarkenton wasn't even a first-ballot HOFer.  I wasn't around when he was playing, but his career seems to me more like a Steve Largent or Marcus Allen; guys who were never seriously considered the best ever, but played for long enough to rack up records of significance.

In fact, right now, if you ask people if Favre was better than Marino (even though Favre broke practically all of Marino's career-based records), I doubt few would say yes.  Like the comparison of Emmitt to Barry, it's just obvious that the record holder was not the superior player.

But the real point is that people "stopped" talking about Tarkenton because they never really talked about him in the first place.  It took him three years to get into the HOF and he owned every record at the time.

So no, someone passing Marino's record won't diminish talk of Marino in Miami.  He's still considered arguably the greatest passer to ever play the game, and neither Favre nor Brees will take that from him.  The one person who might is Peyton.

In fairness, this is going on in Denver as well.  Heck, I think the Bills are still looking for the next Jim Kelly as well.  The Jets are still looking for the next Namath, and he wasn't even that great!  I think Miami's problems are the norm.  Few teams have the fortune of going Montana-Young / Favre-Rodgers / Manning-Luck(?).
