Love him, hate him, or indifferent -- people want to watch the guy play.

Is he the biggest star in the league right now?

Yes, and I added a poll.

Edit to add:

The former #1 and current #2 is sitting out the season with a neck injury.  Number #3 and former number #1 is retired and hanging out in Mississippi.

#4, #5. #6 are Brady, Brees and Rodgers in some order.  (or 2-4 if you are only counting active players)

No. Best story this year? Yes. Most compelling because of the love/hate thing? Probably. Biggest star? No. I think guys like Aaron Rodgers doing commercials or Tom Brady and his media coverage and supermodel wife are bigger "stars." -EK

I said "yes".  Tebow is the most famous right now.  If I had to pick someone to endorse a product, I'd guess that Tebow is the biggest draw.  He's all anyone talks about, especially non-hardcore fans.  I think that he transcends the sports world.

No.....I would easily rate Rodgers, Brees, (and hold on while I try to keep from vomiting) Brady well ahead of him. There are probably more as well but these three popped into mu head first when I think about the NFL.

I don't think my Mom would recognize Rodgers or Brees.  Tebow has a Michael Jordan quality to him.  People without interest in the sport still know him.

On the flip side My mom would have no clue who Tebow was but would know Rogers and Brees. I guess it could go both ways really!!!!!

But you also live in Florida Dave. Do you think a random mom in Wisconsin would think of Tebow ahead of Rodgers? I don't.

No, but I think a random mom in Tennessee or California or Hawaii would know Tebow over Rodgers.  I'm thinking about national media.  They talk about Tim Tebow on basketball broadcasts, Howard Stern, etc.  Rodgers is a much superior player, but not nearly as recognized by name, I don't think.

Edit:

New poll from ESPN names Tebow as America's favorite athlete: http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7451061/espn-sports-poll-denver-broncos-tim-tebow-us-favorite-active-pro-athlete

Good for him. He takes a lot of grief for things both in and out of his control, so that's cool. I tend to agree with Phishfan for exactly why he stated. Bree's (NyQuil for example) and Rodgers (the double-check) commercials give them greater exposure to non-sports fans. I think in terms of "biggest star" those kinds of endorsements go a long way. I also think it's hard to name someone as the biggest star when he is inexplicably disliked by so many people. -EK

I think I may be working with a different definition of "biggest star in the NFL" than some of you. I'd give Tebow the nod for "most popular personality" or "most polarizing figure," but definitely not for "biggest star in the NFL." He doesn't even crack my top-25 for that category.

I have an ongoing joke with my friends.  Tebow will be on the cover of Madden 2013, and he'll get hurt.  This will obviously infuriate God.  Thus, the apocalypse will in fact take place in 2012 as predicted.

I still think Peyton Manning because of the pure volume of commercials he is in and everyone knows him even housewives who don't follow football. But Tebow might be Top 3 and hasn't reached that level yet.

My mom told me that they discussed Tebow on "the View."  If you are not familiar with the show it is a chick day time talk show.  It may have been the first football discusion for that show.
