Coughlin is the coach NFL players would least want to have

Tom Coughlin has won a Super Bowl, and he currently has the Giants in first place, but that doesn’t mean players on other NFL teams would want to play for him.

In a Sporting News poll of 111 NFL players, Coughlin came in first place, with 22 votes, on the question, “Which coach would you least like to play for?“

Bears defensive tackle Anthony Adams explained that most NFL players like a more flexible coach than the strong-willed Coughlin.

“Coughlin is that old school, Bill Parcells, my way or the highway type,” Adams said. “He won’t bend at all. That’s not the kind of coach you’d like to play for.”

Close on Coughlin’s heels was Dolphins coach Tony Sparano, who got 21 votes. Up next was Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who got 15 votes.

I remember reading this when it was first posted.  I guess this shows that the opinion of players is not a particularly good metric.

On the other hand, just because you're inflexible doesn't mean you can coach.

This is proof that it doesn't matter if you're a hard assed coach or a "player's coach".  You have to know what you're doing.  Coughlin knows what he's doing.  Sparano doesn't.
