I realize there is always political reasons for saying thinigs but how can you be publically disrepsectful to Brees if you are New Orleans?

The signing of Drew Brees has gone from a no-brainer to something more complicated rather quickly. It took a natural disaster for the New Orleans Saints to be desperate enough to sign [Brees] in 2006. Six glorious years later, the team is privately trying to sell itself on the notion that Brees is simply a "very good" quarterback. That was the word coming out of the NFL scouting combine this past week, when Saints general manager Mickey Loomis tried to define Brees as "very good" when the quarterback was called "great," according to three league sources. All three sources were asking Loomis why it was taking so long to sign Brees to a contract extension. Loomis' answer spoke volumes.Read more: http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/324812-brees-not-good-enough-for-loomis?xid=cnnbin#ixzz1nztQ42HM

Miami should pay Brees

"Cool Brees finally hits South Beach"  there's your headline, just give me some royalties

In all seriousness though, what a dope.  Brees probably isn't going anywhere, but it's reasons like this the Saints have been mediocre at best for so long.

Well, at least we know that (according to Mr. Loomis) there are only two "elite" QB's. Only one of them are getting paid elite money. If he doesn't want to pay Drew, I can think of a certain aqua & orange team that would gladly clear salary cap room for him. Unless Mr. Ross got Mr. Loomis' memo. And agrees with him.

Looks like they tagged him.  That frees up Carl Nicks.

Seems like Brees wants around $23 million a year instead of about $18 million the Saints want to pay him. Looks like Brees is acting like a baby in all of this. $18 million is what Manning and Brady are roughly making.

In a league that can terminate a contract at anytime, I don't blame him. He outplayed both Brady & Manning last year. He also has more viable years to play. If the Saints don't want to pay him, there are plenty of teams that will.

You apparently didn't read the article you quoted very well. He is seeking Manning money which I don't think many people would disagree on. He is certainly putting butts in the seats and selling jerseys.

Brees is seeking a contract that averages $23 million per season for the first three years of his deal, sources told Schefter. That's the same amount Peyton Manning's Colts contract averages the first three seasons.

But the Saints are offering Brees a five-year contract that averages $18 million a year, sources told Schefter, which is the average that Manning and New England's Tom Brady are due to earn over the life of their deals.

It's always frustrating to get these snippets and seeing them spun by the media. There's just no way of knowing if Brees is being a baby or if the Saints are offering a bum deal without getting more details.

If the $18M over 5 years is back-heavy (e.g. $10M each of the first two seasons and $23 for the remainder), then I can absolutely understand Brees balking at it. He feels (and has the numbers to back it up) that he's an elite quarterback and wants elite pay now. Without contract guarantees, all it takes is one fluke hit and he sees none of that money.
