I'll use Star Wars as an example, since it's the property I connected with most as a kid.

I loved that series.  ...still do, despite thinking that about half of it is utter garbage.  I know that there would be people who would flip out if it were re-made or re-imagined, but I, for one, would be OK with it.  With something that's been around SOooooo long, like Star Wars, Star Trek, Batman, Superman, Planet of the Apes, Indiana Jones, James Bond, etc.  -- things get too convoluted.  You have so many writers that are trying to follow the same canon, that it muddies up the story and makes it hard to follow.  I think that once in a while, the series needs to start fresh, take the themes of the past, and take the series in an updated direction.

I have really liked the re-boots that have been done well, and they're from some of my favorite franchises: Rise of the Planet of the Apes was super dope, as was the JJ Abrahams Star Trek, Batman Begins, Casino Royale, etc.

I've said this before, but I've always really liked the movie Alien Nation (maybe the idea more than the actual film).  I'd love to see that updated.

What do you love and how would you feel if it started over?

Star Wars already WAS rebooted in my humble opinion.

I loved the Star Trek reboot. Don't really have an issue with reboots in general as long as they are well done.

Star Wars wasn't rebooted at all.  That's the problem.  They tried to give you a new story, but had to cram it in with everything else already written.

Star Trek didn't have to follow what had already happened before.  They could go in their own direction.

But, you also didn't really answer the question:  What property do you love and how would you feel if it were re-done?

Not really. They had a general storyline to follow, but they could have gone a lot of different ways with the characters except for a few of them.

How was this in any way different from Star Wars? In fact if you ask me Star Trek had a LOT more previous material they had to wade through. Every single character from the original is pretty much there, only younger. Heck a whole 15 minutes of the movie was devoted to the already well known Kobiyashi Maru scenario and I thought it was expertly handled.

But, you also didn't really answer the question:  What property do you love and how would you feel if it were re-done?
I thought I did. I loved both Star Wars and Star Trek.

The Star Trek reboot was genius. Loved everything about it including the people they chose to play all the cast members. I thought the casting was outstanding except for that old guy that played the old spock, he looked hideous, who was that old guy anyway he needs to retire or something. Smiley

In my opinion Star Wars was rebooted. Same storyline, but all new characters. Vader and the Emperor are really the only characters from the 2 series that carry over (unless you count robots and I don't) and even they aren't the same because it's technically pre and post Vader and Emperor. I'll be honest, I didn't think episodes 1 thru 3 really held a candle to episode 4 through 6, but they weren't terrible either. Star Wars - A New Hope was a phenomenon like never before seen in the history of movie making. Stars Wars - The Phantom Menace was just another Sci Fi flick. A good Sci Fi flick, but nothing special.

So I loved the Star Trek reboot. I was a little disappointed in the Star Wars reboot. I don't mind reboots. They can be either great or not so great.

That's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Sequels are ok I guess, but I hate remakes with a passion. That is all................

It's not a reboot.  It's a prequel to an existing story that fits in line with the existing material.  A reboot takes the universe and re-tells the story in a different way.

The Star Wars re-boot used time travel to re-tell the original Star Trek story in a different way.  In this new version, Kirk's dad is dead, Vulcan is destroyed, Spock and Uhura are a romantic item.  They have a clean slate to go in any direction they want, because canon isn't dictating anything.  They could kill Spock or Kirk if they wanted to and the story would still work.

If they kill Anakin in the prequels, the whole thing can't make sense.

Also appearing in both the prequels and the original trilogy: Chewbacca, Yoda, Jabba the Hutt, Greedo, Grand Moff Tarkin, Obi Wan Kenobi, Mon Mothma (scene deleted), Boba Fett,  Owen and Beru Lars

It's neither here nor there, but I think The Phantom Menace sucks, and is a total failure as not only a Star Wars film, but a cohesive story, in general.

I have no problem with reboots or remakes. None.

What I don't get is when people feel a reboot somehow takes away from "their version". I've never understood that.

I don't feel that way about re-boots or remakes, but I do sometimes feel that way about sequels.  I've seen sequels (or prequels) undermine the story of the original.

The Matrix is a good example of this.  I also think that you can say the same about the Star Wars prequels.  Though not a big deal, the concept of "midichlorians" changes the meaning of "the force" in the original trilogy, for the worse, in my opinion.

Something that always irked me about the "new"/prequel Star Wars- why did they have so many freaking droids then but not in the chronologically LATER movies (5-7)? This makes no sense to me whatsoever. Shouldn't it have been the other way around as their technology progressed?? -EK

^ Definitely.

I think the way they explain this away is that the war ended up destroying a bunch of technology and put them back into a dark age of sorts.

I think Alien Nation could be rebooted. District 9 had some elements of Alien Nation in it.
If you had the right director and actors, I think the classic spaghetti westerns could be remade.
