San Fran QB Alex Smith in Miami today meeting with Dolphins.

Don't like the guy one bit, this would be a bad move. Probably a ploy to get Flynn to accept a deal ASAP but still. If not and this is serious they have lost their damn minds down there! Guy was a total "game-manager" last year asked to do little. In Philbin's WCO he will be asked to do alot and he has proven in his 7 years he can't be that kind of QB

I'd rather stick with Moore than sign Smith...he won't be as impressive without Vernon Davis to throw to.

Smith and Manning have the same agent. If Alex Smith has a heads up Peyton is going to SF, don't be shocked to see Smith sign today in Miami even for less money to make sure he gets that gig before Flynn.

Flynn might have overplayed his hand. Ireland better be sure he wants Smith because that first offer he throws out to Alex might get a "YES" no matter what it is

Will be interesting to follow today

This doesn't seem like a big deal to me. I doubt either side wants a contract- it's all about leverage. Smith is telling the 49ers, "Hey, I'm not going to wait around for you to see what Manning does. If you screw that up and don't offer me a contract in the meantime, you lose us both and are stuck with Colin Kaepernick." Miami is telling Flynn, "You're not the only girl in town we can take to the prom. Make a decision." I don't see Smith to Miami happening. -EK

You dont play with fire at the starting QB position. Even if Miami signs Flynn now they clearly don't view him as "the guy" and if Tannehill is there at #8 I expect Miami drafts him to double down at that position. Moore in the final year of his contract would fetch a 6th or 7th round pick probably. Should Miami go with a Flynn/Tannehill combo.

Mike Klis of Denver Post reporting Broncos will turn their attention to Matt Flynn and Matt Hasselbeck  (should Manning sign with Tenn) if Manning doesn't go to Denver.

If Alex Smith is the Dolphins prized quarterback signing, you may as well not even bother to watch.

If Miami signs Flynn or Smith, I don't think either of them will be the annointed starter.  there will simply be a battle in preseason to determine the starter.  Miami does need a backup QB.

Geez Mike, in the other thread you say no way is Tennehill there at #8.  I think he may be there, but Miami better not draft him in the 1st round, not worth the risk.

Thank you.  What has Alex done this year that Matt Moore didn't?  Seriously, did he throw for 300+ yds a game?  Did he have many multiple TDs game (5 by the way)?  Was his passer rating off the charts (90)?

Matt Moore had 4 games of multiple TDs and his passer rating was 87.  And don't forget, he had 3 less games (came in half way thru game for Henne vs SD)

I would rather stay with Moore and go into next year with him as the starter.  Yes, he is a back-up QB, but you can't go chasing after over-rated money grabbing QBs (Flynn) or go after a so-so starter from a playoff team (smith) just because you feel the fan base has to.

Look, I know we need a franchise QB, I get it don't worry.  But, and this a BIG BUT, there is nothing out there at this time, so you have to suck it up and spend the money wisely.  Draft a QB this yr in the 2nd/3rd round and develop him.  Make sure you hit with the 1st round and 2nd round picks.

According to the Denver Post, the Dolphins are currently negotiating a contract with free agent Alex Smith that would pay him $8 million annually.
The Dolphins are so desperate, after losing out on Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn, that they're now willing to significantly overpay a borderline NFL starter at near the level of franchise quarterback money. Matt Flynn only got $6.33M annually from the Seahawks. Smith isn't as physically talented as incumbent Dolphins starter Matt Moore, and he's certainly not worth more than Flynn. At this point, it's almost like the Fins are trying to sign a quarterback, just to sign a quarterback. - Rotoworld.com

I just had surgery to repair my hernia, so I have lots of vicodin. This is helping me cope with this offseason. I hate Alex Smith. He just didn't screw up last year in San Fran, that's it. Did you see him against the Giants in the NFC Championship game? Oh Christ.

The ONLY way I am on board with Alex Smith is if Miami drafts a QB in Rd 1 or 2 THIS YEAR! Come hell or high water you gotta fix the QB issue THIS YEAR! Whether its sign Smith and draft Weeden in Rd 2. Or sign Smith and take Osweiler at some point.

Jason Cole of Yahoo says the ONLY way Smith goes to Miami is if Manning goes to SF. Smith wants to stay in California so even if the Fins offer more $$$ Smith will take less to stay in SF
