(please let's not make this, I wouldn't do it for $100,I'd kick your ass.....It's the theory..not the example)

If I gave you the option which would you rather...

I'll give you $1200,to get 12 Extremely painful shots in the middle of your back....

Or

I'll Give you on One Extremely painful shots in the middle of your back every 1st of the month for 1 year, and $100 each time...

(I started to do this example with kicked in the nuts,I think it works better for the thought of how much pain, but it is exclusive to men)

This is very difficult to decide. $1200 at one shot would be more useful that 12 $100 payments. But I might rather spread the pain through 12 months though.

I guess I would rather spread it out.

I think all at once.  Get it over with.  A full year of dreading the end of the month, each and every month would be worse than the pain itself.

All at once, in your example.

However, I much prefer a long, dull pain -- like the pain from after surgery, rather than a sharp shooting pain, like breaking a limb.

I had to give myself twice daily shots in the stomach for like a month. You get over it. I'd spread it out.

Can I choose neither?

I could definitely use the $$, but I'd rather not injure myself to get it.

Do we know what the injection is?  I'm assuming it's not bad for you.  I kinda like to know what is being injected into my body as a good rule of thumb. Tongue

I hate the prolonged, dull pain.... Give me the short, sharp one.Wink

I feel this a bit of the same situation as,You get out of your car turn around and someone has a gun pointed at you...What do you do? questions. What you say when asked, and what you actually would do,might be different based upon a lot of different factors...

I admit,I sort of have an out...with this one...
The financial motivation is the deciding factor,as Phish pointed out exactly...I'd try to take all the shots all at once, using the first one as the gauge of could I take the other 11 now....Hoping if they are extremely painful,I go into shock about 3 or 4 in and pass out and don't remember the last 7 or 8....

Or after the first one, See you on the first of next month!

I'm more of an all at once,as I deal with lots of dull pain in my everyday life.My knees, shoulders, and feet in recent years are a constant aching/poping, constant sources of pain...So if I can get all the pain over with, and Stop no pain at all...I'll try it...

Can I get $1,200 each month for taking 12 extremely painful shots each month? I have a high tolerance for pain and a low tolerance for being poor...

He never mentioned pain intensity.  All at once please.

You're assuming the "spread it out" option is less painful.  By his description, both are "extremely painful" and thus, I'd rather be in extreme pain once than 12 times.

Seems like a no-brainer to me.

^^Pain is multiplicative. I'm assuming that the pain you feel from each shot is the same, so the pain you feel from 12 at once is essentially 12 times the pain you feel from one at a time.

If you don't believe that pain is multiplicative, try this little experiment.  Heat a needle with a lighter for a minute or so and press the point lightly to your finger. You probably will barely notice the needle is hot. Now heat something with a little more surface area to it like maybe a screwdriver for a minute or so and press it to your finger. You'll definately notice that the screwdriver is hot and you'll probably have to remove it from your finger.

The reason is that your body is covered with millions of pain receptors. Each receptor sends a message to your brain indicating that it detects pain. Your brain will ignore a few individual messages for the most part, but when it gets a rush of hundreds or thousands at once, it can't ignore that and you react to it. The same general principle would apply to shots I would assume.

^^ That's because larger surface area transfers heat more quickly so the "hotness" of your finger increases much more rapidly.

stab yourself with a pin and it hurts.  then stab yourself again...  Does it hurt twice as much the second time?  I don't think so.

No, it doesn't transfer the heat more quickly, it just transfers the heat to more of the heat/pain receptors which your brain interprets as more pain.

No it hurts the same amount as the first time, which means you have received twice the total amount of pain.

^^ your logic makes no sense to me but I don't want to argue about it.  Its a scientific fact that larger surface area = faster conductive heat transfer.  But you can believe whatever you want that's OK too.
