Mariano Rivera blew out his ACL last night shagging fly balls during BP.  Before any of you flip out about this...he's been doing it for 20 years.

Mo said this was his last year.  I hope he doesn't go out like this.  Heart breaking, even for a Red Sox fan.  Get better soon, Mo.  You're a class act and a warrior.

I heard on the radio this morning that this is a common pratice and a lot of pitchers do it.  Maybe after this, teams will put a stop to it.

I was reading that it was something he had always done, in fact he wanted to play a game in the OF before his career was over the story said.

I hate the Yankees, but it's kind of hard to not respect a guy like Rivera.

Not a Yankee fan but I have a ton of respect for Mo and like Maine said I too hope this is not how he ends his amazing career.

Might as well ask them to quit taking showers because you could slip on the wet floor and tear an ACL. It was a freak accident, nothing more. No one is gonna change their practices because of this.

What if you were a baseball coach and you saw your star pitcher playing a game of pickup basketball with his buddies and the game was getting a little rough?  Or better yet, fooling around on the baseball field doing stuff that he normally doesn't do?  I'd pull him aside and tell him why he shouldn't be doing stuff like that.

There's a reason why NFL contracts prohibit "dangerous activity" such as motorcycle riding.

It's keeping in shape. Other pitchers do it, some run on the warning track..... It's the same thing he's done for 20 years. Like Pappy said, freak accident

Yes, but Shagging fly balls on a baseball field pre-game is not a dangerous activity.

Shagging balls during batting practice? I would consider that part of his contract.

A pitcher is a position player.  He needs to be able to field a bunt or catch a fly ball.  Every pitcher does drills, Mo is no different.  Saying "maybe they'll stop" is like saying "maybe batters will stop taking BP" because one takes a foul tip off his foot and misses three months.  Makes zero sense.  These are ball players.  They play ball.
