This is an offshoot of the Amazing stat I heard today thread in the Around the NFL thread....I thought about how I would react if someone just doubled my salary, let alone pay me a million dollars a year...

I'm wondering about the money side of things, and how you'd handle the money, what would change,etc,etc...Not really about the job changing,as in twice as many hours,etc,etc....

Scenario,....Just before the end of the day, your boss comes up to you and says...."Starting Monday,we're doubling your current salary.... Congratulations..."

(I know most of us aren't heading to the car lot straight from work,or checking real estate listing first thing Saturday morning...)

How would your life change? Would you consider getting a bigger/nicer house? a better car? Pay off debts, try to help your family?

I actually had this happen to me recently, not doubled but close.  Also, around the same time I got a massive lawsuit settlement.

No change, I am young, single, and have no bills/obligations.  I have never been a spender or buyer of things, and I lived comfortably before, so there really hasn't been anything different.  Maybe now I can go on a few crazy vacations or something but other than that it's status quo.

I would make two significant changes:

1) Start doubling up on my house payment
2) this

Now, if you were to talk about tripling or quadrupling my salary... now we're getting into the ballpark of more significant lifestyle changes.  I like my house, so I probably wouldn't move... but I'd probably start wearing a lot more suits.

Good thread Lil B.

I would do what Spider did and double up on house payments, although I don't have much left to pay off.  I would double the amount of money that goes into my 401k.  Then once I finish paying off my house, I'll buy a bigger boat.

Lifestyle wouldn't change. But a few things would be a lot closer in sight. Like being that 1st time homeowner.

I'm not sure how much fun I'd be to sit next to,My first Dolphins game I was in such shock, stunned at all the "other people Wearing Dolphins gear".I'm used to being in rooms as the only,or one of maybe a handful of Dolphins fan...It would make it easier for me to go to a Dolphins game!

I think if this happened to me,
1st - I'd wonder if I'm dead, what was the last thing that I remember doing...Slap myself to see if I'm dreaming.
2nd - I'd want to know if I'm being haunted by the ghosts of Alan Fudd, and Dick Clark...Waiting for one of their ghosts to come out and say...I'm on Candid Camera,or Bloopers and Practical jokes....
3rd - I'd be waiting for the police to swoop in arrest me for embezzlement,I've been on the job since 2007 with zero raises....

Ok,Ok jokes aside,I'm just really happy to have a job now,and am constantly fearful they're going to fire me every month. What will I do next...

Though doubling my salary, still makes me less than $50,000 a year,so it's not exactly champagne wishes and caviar dreams. It would allow me to take care of my Mom the way I should, and not worry as much about her.It would allow me to get a better shack (go from 1938 modern to 1968 modern  Cheesy ) perhaps in a better neighborhood, allow me to save money for a rainy day,get health insurance.I think it would be a big change,in how I'd live my life, perhaps do more things...

I probably wouldn't do anything, other than upgrade the things I have that are starting to wear out.   ...cars, mostly.  Also, probably start looking to buy a place.

I would do some home improvement stuff that I need to do and get a new vehicle. I would also take a nice vacation.

I'd buy a condo and redo my wardrobe. I haven't really bought new clothes in ages. Just bits and pieces here and there as things wear out. I'd love to just toss all of this crap and start over. Pay off my student loans and hospital bills. That's it. Without the doubled income I'm pretty comfortable so I'm not really wanting for anything.

Believe it or not, x2 your income wouldn't change your life as much as you think it does.  People always account for their income - quickly - as changes aren't as drastic as they think they would be.

Years ago I left my line of work to go back into media / scouting and took a massive pay cut to do it.  I was fine.  Years later I left media / scouting and came back to my line of work and (basically) doubled my income by doing it.  I'm not lighting my stogies with Benjamins, the change isn't all that drastic.  Your life accounts for it quickly.

I would commission the creation of the world's largest chili cheese dog and share it with all my friends...

I am not sure that my life would be much different really. I have always lived within my means so like a few others have said I might enjoy an extra vacation or two out of it but I do not see much more changing.

I might splurge on some new golf clubs and some fishing gear, maybe some shit for the new rig.  And a trip to the liquor store.
