It's depressing that one the eve of a new season, I'm already having to look forward to next year...at the earliest.

Ireland, Philbin, and company have made it very clear this season is not important whatsoever.  That strategy may pay off (as long as Ireland is around, I have serious doubts), but it really hurts knowing that I've gotta sit through another shitty season waiting for the future.

+1.  This move would be justified if Davis were an aging/overpaid vet.  I realize that his work ethic has been questionable to best..but if you're agreeing that this year is a "lost cause,"  trade him at the deadline if he's still a slacker in your eyes.  Give him a chance to turn it around.

I don't understand why everyone's upset.  This looked like a guy who might not even start -- now we have picks for him and it's no longer our problem.

I tend to agree with MikeO here.  Get rid of guys who aren't taking their position seriously.

All I hear and read everyday that Miami's secondary sucks. Well, isn't Vonate part of the problem then if you hold that opinion? So, Miami got a 2nd round pick for a guy who is part of the problem of a bad secondary. Check that...Miami got a 2nd round pick for a BACK-UP PLAYER in a bad secondary. How can anyone be mad about this is beyond me!

Vontae Davis is an incredibly frustrating player to watch -- not unlike Sean Smith, btw -- because he shows flashes of brilliance, but can't seem to consistently perform at a high level. It seems like we've seen more inconsistency and less brilliance from him this preseason... he could still turn it around and become a great player, but I think the trade makes a lot of sense.

Despite the most recent depth chart, though, I don't believe Marshall is as good as Vontae. Marshall looked pretty bad against the Falcons and that worries me.

Ireland is doing a great job of buying high and selling low.  Can't wait for him to be canned.

At this point, I'm not even raising an eyebrow. I could understand stockpiling draft picks to build around a core group of players. Then again, I would also have to have something I don't have. That is faith in the GM. Does it matter if Vontae was reduced to being a nickel back? No. Because that's still a "starting" position on defense. Its not like he was a feature HB that got reduced to being a 3rd down back. His attitude sucked last year. It sucked coming into training camp. But he was also showing improvement. Its not like Vontae started as a back up. Spent 3 yrs as a back up. And going to a new team as a back up. I don't know why management gave up on Vontae. But I can't celebrate picking up a draft pick when they could've used this opportunity to pick up a WR. Seriously, does anyone else notice that they don't trade to pick up players? Anymore?

You NEED a nickle corner. Vontae could have been really good at that position. Now the job goes to who? Nolan Carroll? Who's shown what? NOTHING. It didn't matter if he started or not, he was going to play a LOT.

Miami didn't use a 1st round pick a few years back on a nickle corner. That's the problem. The bar for Vontae is higher. He failed.

The 2nd round pick (which might be like a late 1st) is a steal for Miami.

With Vontae and Marshall Miami came in 3rd place/tied for last in the AFC East. They can come in 3rd or last place without them just as easy. Vontae=NOT an impact player!

Before the trade he was just a nickel back. There was no guarantee that was going to stay that way. Unlike the majority of Ireland draft picks (prior to today), he was still on the team. Yet, Ireland still has his job. If we are judging by "impact player" status, then why is Ireland still the GM?

This is a great deal for us. In Joe we trust. I like his emphasis on quality guys, hard workers are more valuable than talented but lazy. This is how you build champions. I love it

Character guys that work hard. If that's not you, go play elsewhere.

I won't miss vontae, but I am concerned about the corners. Apparently Smith is making big progress this year, so Marshall might be enough on the other side. We definitely need high level play from Jones and Clemens/Culver.

This whole "character is what counts" would engender more confidence if Miami's current WR and DB corps didn't look like they were from a really good Division I team.

Ireland and Philbin are setting themselves up for a Cameron-type win-or-be-fired season.  The whole "I do things my way" mindset doesn't work if you lose.

I think you're giving them more credit than they deserve.

V. Davis must be a real doucher to put up with.  The team is quite a few players away from being a contender.  So I hope that they don't package this 2nd round pick with something else to get a quality WR for this year.  They need a lot more than a WR.  I know their WR is corps is terrible, but picking up a quality WR is not going to turn this team into a playoff team.  I don't know how good next year's draft class is supposed to be, but it might be best to hold onto the decent number of high round draft picks that the Fins are going to have.
