Talk about irony. It just doesn't get any better than this. Why not start exporting American flags made with a chemical that becomes violently toxic when burned? That way, we can get several at 1 time.

First off, Alanis Morissette that is not an example of irony.

Second, more American flags are made in China than in the USA, we are a net importer not exporter of American flags.

Third, that is not an actual US flag, (look at the design), the stars are not just in a box but across and entire side.  It was homemade.

But it is funny.

What  / who is Alanis M.Huh

I think it is very ironic that someone protesting our country and burning our flag dies in the act.

I never said we were a major exporter.. I said we SHOULD start exporting chemical laden flags. It was a joke. Do you try and pick everything apart??? JK

Yes, import flags from China. How sad.

A singer.  She had a song called "Ironic" but the only thing Ironic about the song was that her examples weren't ironic.

Most people underestimate how broad the definition of irony is.

It is literally "results other than intended," which means that every example Alanis cited technically qualifies.

While dying from burning a symbol of something you hate is certainly ironic, Alanis Morissette doesn't seem to grasp the concept. Some of her examples do qualify, or would with some build-up, most just miss the mark. "A black fly in your Chardonnay", "Rain on your wedding day",  "Traffic jam when you're already late"... and so on are clearly not ironic, but just unfortunate (but entirely reasonable and not at all "contrary to expectation"). Bad luck does not, by itself, constitute irony.

As for the original Greek meaning... well, hardly anyone sticks to that definition anymore.
