Here is the grades that Scott Altman of The Bleacher Report gives the Fins on FA signings. For those of you not familiar with Scott, he is a very good writer and is one of my personal favorite. I think you will find his articles accurate and usually on the optimistic side (which I like).

As far as this article goes, JI has taken some heat for some of his FA signings and non signing. I personally didn't think this year was a "bumper crop" of talent, but was disappointed to see them let RT Eric Winston get away when RT was a major need and he was ranked as one of the best in the league. As it turned out, they drafted Martin and all seems well.

My comments...Love Thiggy and Lane. No way do I give 5 mil a year to Marshall. Naanee was a nightmare!

Jovorskie Clear The Lane was clearly a Mike Sherman decision, and a good one at that.  At least Ireland listened to his coaches on that one.

Agree. I believe that Ireland, Sherman and Philbin have a very good working relationship and listen to each other. I am glad to see it. Parcells would have never took the advice of a coach on who to pick.

That said, now McCoy needs to get in the game and tell Jeff he needs some players. lol

Yes, all good decisions should be attributed to coaches, and all poor decisions are clearly Ireland's fault.

Do you see how ridiculous you sound?

"Clear the Lane"  doesn't get old...best nickname ever.

Not as ridiculous as Ireland himself asking a draft prospect if his mother was a prostitute.  Let's face it, Ireland has created a reputation for himself as a bumbling nitwit.  It's going to be a long time before that changes, if ever.

"My dad was a pimp.  My mom worked for my dad."

Draw your own conclusion.

His reputation COULD easily change, if buffoons would quit bringing up negative things he did 3 or 4 years ago as evidence.

One place where I sorta disagree with ya Brian. You are right, draw your own conclusion. Which is why the question didn't need to be asked. Jeff asked it though. That is something Jeff might never live down.

Never understood this argument. If I am responsible for spending a high round draft pick and millions of dollars of my bosses $$$ on a WR while risking my very job, you are damn right I want to know what kind of environment the kid grew up in. Is it a deal breaker? Maybe. BTW, how did that turn out? lol

The Art Hicks "situation" is getting very ugly for Ireland. This from the Miami Herald............

The Dolphins are feuding with prominent NFL agents John Rickert and Peter Schaffer, who filed a grievance against the Dolphins with the players association this week because Miami is refusing to pay guard Artis Hicks’ $1.2 million salary. The Dolphins claim Hicks, their first offseason signing, did not disclose a pre-existing neck condition. Hogwash, his agents says. Hicks was released last week.

Rickert said in 2006 that Hicks had a neck sprain – “totally different” from the current bone spurs on his vertebrae - and that his 2006 MRI was negative and he did not miss a game. “Peter has been in the business 25 years, and he and I have never seen a situation like this where a team is so blatantly unfair against a player,” said Rickert, who represents Dolphins linebacker Kevin Burnett and many others.

Will the agents steer players away from Miami now? Rickert said “if this is the type of treatment” players get, “it would definitely enter our thinking.”

Ex-Dolphins Phillip Merling was cut by the Packers today.

Another early pick by the Fins who didn't make it and who's career is probably over.  Also another nut-job who beat up his pregnant girlfriend

Exactly the point.  In a professional environment, that's not something you would ever ask a job applicant.  EVER.  If I went to interview for a job and the interviewer asked me that question, I would see to it that the interviewer would be applying for jobs alongside me.

The Dez Bryant thing, the Alex Smith thing -- those were dumb. The main thing you have to hold against Ireland is dumping Brandon Marshall AND NOT SIGNING ANYONE TO REPLACE HIM. The guy's on "Hard Knocks" talking to someone on the phone, talking about his Receivers: "We've got a lot of fours, fives and sixes. We need some ones, twos and threes." Well, it's HIS JOB to go get some ones, two and threes. They dump Brandon Marshall, they sign Legedu Naanae. How'd that work out? And he blew it a couple years ago with Paul Soliai, not getting a deal done, having to franchise the guy, making him the highest paid Lineman (Offense or Defense) in Dolphin history.

And I mentioned Soliai before and a number of guys jumped my case, saying Ireland did good there, but that's simply not true. He made $14 Million in 2010 and did nothing. So when he tried to go elsewhere nobody would pay him, so the Fins were able to re-sign him. Article in Miami Herald today saying Soliai is supposed to be worth $7.8 Million toward Cap next year when Miami's trying to re-sign Reggie Bush, Jake Long, Sean Smith and Brian Hartline.

This is where Ireland sucks. Along with the later rounds of the draft. He's got no eye for talent. The first 2 rounds, let's face it, you can listen to Mel Kiper and pretty much figure out who to draft. But in the later rounds you are looking for diamonds in the rough and Ireland's like Stevie Wonder at the Free Throw Line.
