To kind of lighten the mood of politics I thought we could make a list of dumb things politicians have said. Obvioulsy we have the 47% quote from Romney and the "you didn't build that" from Obama but there are some funny ones out there. There are lots so this should be a pretty good list.  Please submit at least one from both parties to keep it even.

R - Dan Qualyle - ''I was recently on a tour of Latin America, and the only regret I have was that I didn't study Latin harder in school, so I could converse with these people.''

D - "A zebra does not change its spots." - Al Gore, attacking President George Bush in 1992

"Follow me around" - former Colorado Senator Gary Hart who at the time was the leading candidate for the Democratic nomination in the 1988 presidential election.

Shortly after that quote, Hart was photographed with supermodel Donna Rice on his lap aboard a pleasure craft named "Monkey Business".

Trying keeping it balanced is in fact hard.  I am not saying the dems never misspeak but rarely do they rise to the level of being hilarous, the way the zebra quote is, Hart's statement isn't funny.  Bad idea, but nothing ha ha about "follow me around". There are entire books dedicated to W's funny misquotes.  And Dan Quail was the second most prolific.

My favorite being one from W, "There's an old saying in Tennessee -- I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee -- that says, fool me once, shame on --shame on you. Fool me -- you can't get fooled again."

Nothing funny, but certainly dumb, which is the title of this thread.  And it also was a dumb move he made going on that pleasure craft with that woman.  He had been dogged for years with rumors of marital infidelity.  That statement, combined with his actions afterward, cost him a shot at being president.

He wasn't being dumb.  He just misread the teleprompter.   Grin

I saw the funniest cartoon with Obama. Picture this.

Obama is standing in front of a urinal. The urinal has a teleprompter that says.

1. Pee

2. Unzip

3. Shake

The dumbest thing I think any politician has ever said came from the mouth of Clayton Williams, who was running for governor of Texas in 1990.

Clayton Williams compared a campaign event, which was spoiled by yucky weather at his ranch, to a rape in front of a slew of reporters saying, ''If it's inevitable, just relax and enjoy it.''  He was leading by 11 points when he said it, and lost by 2, 3 months later.

It wasn't even a "gotcha question" kind of moment...he offered it unbidden, only adding to the stupidity of the statement.
