1928 Sikorsky Flying boat
AKA by my friends the "Secretive Winchester project",or "project orange" (It was orange an white for most of the building)

I'd work on it after work, and in my free time...it just kept dragging,on,and on...

I found a picture of this plane superbowl weekend on a random blog, but it didn't say what type of plane it was...So eventually I found out what it was,but very little reference pictures to go by.So then I thought about the Airplane from Mad max,it was too simple. Then I decided on the V4U Corsair, but it had been done to death.I wanted to do something different.I went back to the Sikorsky, and found out there are only 2 replicas in still around,Hence the few reference pictures..

I built the model in Separate files, and then brought all the pieces together, trying not to kill my computer..

I spent a month on the engines, then stopped for about 3 weeks to help a a friend to an animated short, that never came to fruition.I struggled to get back to modeling it,even came here, and started a post asking for help,in which I deleted an hour later...

I thought Ok, so the engine took a month, the body is pretty simple,I'll knock out the body in a couple of weeks, details in a couple of weeks...May 1st this project will be done...Boy was I wrong...

Late June- I had  files Body,Wings,Props,Tail,Pontoons,Interior parts, and parts files.I took all the pieces, and copied them over to 1 file Sikorsky come together. As I worked I saved incrementally,so I was on my Sikorsky merged file 2,and had got all the parts, tweaked them so they would fit together.I ended up remaking alot of parts to fit better, and made changes that weren't in the parts files.

Computer problems...I did all my back ups,and copied all my files to Google drive,Amazon, and drop box,and on external hard drives.Upgraded my hard drive to an SSD drive..Went on and modeled the cockpit interior in a separate file,a couple of weeks later I went to open the merge files...They were blank, every copy I had of those files got corrupted. Months of work gone...

Motherboard had a Sata Port Die,got a new Processor,Motherboard, and Hard drive...

This project has been done for a few weeks,I've been struggling with a night scene for this, screw it, post this....Do the night scene down the road...

So this project was my own personal marathon...I still suck at texturing an lighting. So here it is....All these pictures are thumnails,Click to get the full 1920x1080 size picture.

Continued..(Sorry, I locked the thread while I posted this to avoid someone posting inbetween)

I love this shot, though not exactly good picture, but it gives you an idea of the details...

I also decided to start a Tumblr blog to post my work, I've just started, and have only old stuff up there...

B, have you ever thought of switching fields?  I am sure your hobby could turn into an amazing career (Hollywood, NY, etc.)

My favorite is the 5th pic (closer shot in front of the building).  I thought it was real until I clicked for the larger picture!!!

Are you making these from wireframes?  Or are you using preset assets?

These are great, B. You really should get a portfolio together and see if you can get a side hustle (that might turn into a full-time hustle) going.

I need to thank Beefstewart for computer help in August, without him this project would have been pretty dead in early August.A huge Thank you again.

Thank you for everyone's encouragement...I have no clue how I'd make a living doing this,I have no formal training.I'm not a photographer,or someone who likes to make movies. So I learn where ever I can online,Youtube,Video tutorials people post,Seminars, etc.I just learned things a month ago, that I suddenly applied....Some of those pictures are a 7-9 hour render times, then find out I don't like it,adjust something,re-render.

Part of the reason for me starting the Tumblr page is sort of like a portfolio,a place to stash my stuff...

I also forgot to mention this is my first plane, and boat for that matter....I'm a little afraid if I start talking about this, someone is going to knock on my door, haul me off to a little rubber room, thinking I'm nuts...

Dave- I'm not sure about your question, what you're asking...

It's box modeling...I start with a primitive Cube, that I make cuts to,then pull the points to make a shape.Apply hypernurbs, smoothing to the object, and more cuts.Stack them together to make an object...

If you're asking did I make the plane, then photo manipulate it into the background?

No,I made everything...All the screws, and bolts have threads on them,I made rubber gaskets, the props the couch cushions, the 5 hangers....All the hangers have beams with bolts, and lights.I made the shipping crates, made the labels on the sides, the big fuel tank, the pallets inside of the hanger.

Presets -
I used Greyscalegorrilla's Linear Daylight for the daytime lighting...Procedurals for the sky, because I couldn't find HDRI lighting sky that I liked. The sunset is all procedural
Xfrog plug in for the background trees, the one I made looked funny
Reeper plug in to make the wires that run from the front and back of the plane...This plan has chain drive, pullies etc controls on it...
Some of the materials,like metals,they're presets,that tweeked

Would some picture help? Screen shot? The file that this is from is 5.25 GB

Does this help? This is a screen shot from above (not rendered) thumbnailed...The Program isn't That Dolphin-like green color ...That's my setting tweek,I find most comfortable working in,while staring at it for hours....

Or would posting one of the unfinished pictures of the plane help?

You have a talent.  I seriously think you should consider getting a resume out.  ...test the waters.  You owe it to yourself.
