Quote from article.

"A spokesman for the Pasadena School system told Fox News that the ban was part of a district-wide wellness policy – and that most of the guidelines come from the federal government."

The federal guidelines prohibit the school from selling the Cheetos in school.  (e.g. vending machines ) Banning the kids from bring them from home is local decision of district or particular school.

I, for one, think this is a great policy.  childhood obesity is a real problem, and these companies that sell food known to make kids fat is just appalling.

I don't like the government telling us what we can and cannot eat, but having schools undermine parents' decisions by making garbage food available at all times is a whole different story.

Well said. Perhaps the nutrition education should start with the parents. Like you, I don't like govt. regs invading my decision making. I do like the idea that the gov. has forced fast food rest. to post nutrition info on their menu items. That way a person can make their own choice based on the info available.

That is fair.

I have mixed views on this specific policy.

I do support Obama's guideline prohibiting the school from selling cheetos and other junk food.

I do support gov't guidelines requiring fast food places to provide nutrition info.

I oppose Mayor Bloomberg's banning of the selling of large soft drinks to ADULTS.

On one hand I think it is silly to have teachers monitoring what food kids bring to school, on the other hand if Cheeto consumption is so widespread to be an issue well then obviously the parents aren't doing their job and it might be time for the school to do what the parents should be doing.

For the most part I see this as a non-issue.  If my kids when to a school with such a policy, I would be okay with the Cheeto ban.  If the school didn't have a Cheeto ban I wouldn't be pushing for one.

I am totally in favor of government deciding what their school sell to kids.  They have to choose what to sell -- might as well make it healthier choices.

I am against banning (within reason) what kids are allowed to bring in their own lunches.

I suppose if you wanted to ban energy drinks or something, I could understand.

Kind of hypocritical of you to say "this is a great policy since childhood obesity is a real problem". To take your statement at face value and equal terms. Since Negros have a 51% higher obesity rate and Hispanics have a 21% higher obesity rate, you should also think that the food police should target them. How about breaking it down into genders too ? You do know that all these silly programs cost money don't you ?

You broke the statement down into racial groups.  What does that have to do with anything?  There's plenty of fat white kids too.  Nothing I stated is hypocritical.

You broke it down into groups when you brought age into it. Your presumption is that it's the governments job to regulate what people buy and eat with their own money. It is not. Maybe let the parents feed their kids what they want to.

You're kidding right?  Yeah, when talking about SCHOOL LUNCHES, breaking it up into age groups (i.e. kids vs adults - because so many adults go to middle schools) is FAR different than breaking it up into black, hispanic and white.  Really?

What did I say?

"I don't like the government telling us what we can and cannot eat, but having schools undermine parents' decisions by making garbage food available at all times is a whole different story."

How is that contrary to letting parents feed kids what they want to?

Its states more about school undermining the parents i.e. parents pack little Johnny an apple, school sells kids cheetos.

You just like to argue just to argue, even when you agree?

The government shouldn't have anything to do with any of it. Give them an inch they take a mile, ie NY soda ban. The government needs to get the fuck out of peoples lives.

I'm sure you know this but, the government owns the schools.  The school cafeteria is a government operated and funded storefront, with children ages 6-17 as their customers...  What they sell is quite literally their business.

I am saying that the federal government should not be making these decisions.
