As was pointed out by one of my very democratic friends if this is offensive then they are going to have to address it on a national scale because it is a very common phrase among whites and blacks. With every ounce of honesty in my bones I had no idea "shuck and jive" was anything and still am not convinced.

From wikipedia ... Shuckin' and jivin' (or shucking and jiving) is a slang term for the behavior of joking and acting facetiously. More generally, the term can also refer to the speech and behavioral mechanisms adopted in the presence of an authoritative figure.[1] Shuckin' and jivin' usually involves clever lies and impromptu storytelling, used to one-up an opponent or avoid punishment. The term is also used in the Southern United States referring to deceit or mischief involving lies.[citation needed]

^^^^ did you see the date that wiki entry was made?

Checks something more reliable and you will see it has strong racial undertones.

so what was trump's big announcement?  he's finally admitting to having a toupee?
President Obama applied for college aid as a foreign student.

Regardless of the truth there is 5 million dollars on the line. That's a lot of money to leave on the table for no reason.

Sept. 29th. I don't get it. What does that prove? Anything could have been edited right? I'm asking because i don't know how it works.

I googled again and found this.

Um, there were a bunch of edits to that page on October 28th.  Does the point seem clear now?

This is not unlike when Palin claimed that Paul Revere was "warning the British" and the Palin-bots went on a rampage trying to edit Wikipedia after-the-fact to match up to her story.

I didnt see that as I noted the Sept date but I don't really know what I'm looking for either on there.   I could argue it must have been changed after I looked but it really doesn't matter who edited what. The fact remains it's such common term that restaurants use it ....  but because an unpopular, irrelevant conservative used it ... it now becomes a big deal? Do you know how silly that sounds to unbiased people?

The same people that say the "possibility" that our president isn't even an American is a non story but yet Palin saying anything is a big deal. This does nothing for your cause outside of your base. Palin isn't even popular with all Republicans let alone independents.

.... Edited to add that I just googled again to find the Wikipedia page and I saw this page where a white man, in the White House, under Obama, used it not once but twice last year.

White House press secretary Jay Carney at the beginning of his Wednesday briefing reacts after bringing out the wrong notebook: "Sorry. I'm going to shuck and jive! Time to shuck and jive."

It matters in that if Palin fans run to edit the Wikipedia page the moment after she says something, it loses its value as a point of reference to defend her.

I humbly submit that no one offering an opinion on this topic is "unbiased," and so is unqualified to comment on what "unbiased" people think of this story.

"Nobody really cares about Palin" (something you claimed twice in this post) is kind of a tough story to sell when she was the most recent keynote speaker at CPAC.  I might as well claim that the Clintons are "irrelevant."

If Palin had used that phrase to refer to herself, I imagine this controversy would not exist.

You have your definitions right there. I think all this shuck and jive talk around here is just that, shuck and jive. Just a smoke screen sham in order to play the race card. Using shuck and jive is only racist if you are white, conservative, or republican. Just another hypocritical double standard from the black community.

So according to your racist morality line ...  if she had said "I'm a ni**er that loves to eat watermelon" then it would be OK because she was referring to herself?

It's either racist or it isn't.

If Obama himself was caught saying the n-word, fainting couches would sell out all over the republic.  So let's try to avoid racial slurs as a point of comparison.

If Sarah Palin had made some excuse about being sleepy today because she had too much fried chicken last night, it's perfectly innocuous.  If she had said that [any black person] was sleepy because they "probably ate too much fried chicken last night," that's not even close to the same thing.

The idea that a statement "is racist or it isn't" is just absurd.  Do you seriously think that Jeff Foxworthy, Chris Rock, and George Lopez could all trade comedy routines with no backlash?  It makes a huge difference when you belong to the group that you are potentially offending.  This is why you frequently see black commentators appear on Fox News when it's time to do a story on the problems of black society (e.g. here).

Seems to me that the majority of the time it's the same group that is offended. I'm glad we have the 1st amendment to counter this horseshit "feel sorry for me/you hurt my feelings" attitude that this country has let continue for too long.

You know that the First Amendment applies exclusively to the government attempting to censor you, right?

It has literally nothing to do with private persons and/or corporations criticizing other private persons based on what they say.

People like Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, and Richard Pryor make fun of everyone and are very funny doing it. Actually many comedians do. Comedy is the one place making fun of stereotypes is aloud. Some comedians have "schtick" that they do a type of comedy like Jeff Foxworthy about rednecks or George Lopez and Mexicans but there are many, many comedians that make fun of both and get away with it.

When did Chris Rock join the "cracker ass cracker" club? (I loved the routine by the way as to not confuse). What makes a statement racist is the intent behind it, not who says it.
