The New Orleans Pelicans were a minor league baseball team from 1887-1977.  Tom Benson owns the rights to the name, and with his purchase of the Hornets, they can switch over to a mascot with some history in the city.  That was probably the "legal issue."

It's no worse than the Pittsburgh Pisces (there's two hours of my life I'm never getting back).

The other two names they are reportedly considering are "Brass" and "Krewe".  A Krewe is a group of Mardi-Gras-ers.  I think both of those are considerably better.

I loved that movie.  It's awesomely terrible!  Plus, it's fun seeing Dr. J at the peak of his talent.

At least the Lakers have a storied history that everyone associates with LA.  It's a stupid name, but in that case, it's almost too late.  The Jazz?  Who cares at this point....change and move on.

The Lakers are actually named after the Lake Trout.  It's one of by far the worst names in pro sports.  If I spend my weekend hunting and butchering it, and it has no menacing quality at all, then it's a stupid ass name.

Dr. J and the kid I was ok with.  The chick from Grease as an astrologer picking basketball games made me wish I was on a 5-state shooting spree.

Both of those are much better and I even heard a suggestion for the Voodoo which I also liked but am guessing would rub people the wrong way and never get chosen either.

Lakers are a carryover from Minneapolis.  Is Lake Trout there or in LA?

From Wikipedia

The Lakers' franchise began in 1947 when Ben Berger and Morris Chalfen of Minnesota purchased the recently disbanded Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League (NBL) for $15,000 from Gems owner Maury Winston. Minneapolis sportswriter Sid Hartman played a key behind the scenes role in helping put together the deal and later the team. Inspired by Minnesota's nickname, "Land of 10,000 Lakes", the team christened themselves the Lakers.

I about died laughing when I heard this yesterday.

Why didn't they go for the Hurricanes as a tribute to Katrina survivors?
Or strike a deal with the University of Louisiana-Lafayette? The New Orleans Raging Cajuns?

Always loved a skull wearing a tophat... It's equal parts "Dealin' with Death" and "Puttin' on the Ritz."
