I think everyone has noticed Miami getting called for fewer penalites this year, but I wanted to see the details, so I did some checking.

After 3 games this year: 9 penalties for -50 yards.

After 3 games in 2012: 14 penalties for -120 yards.

And what is the biggest difference?
In 2012 after 3 games (Houston, Oakland and the Jets) Miami's defense had committed 4 pass interference and 2 Illegal contact penalties for -62 yards.
In 2013 after 3 games (Cleveland, Indy and Atlanta) Miami's defense has committed 1 pass interference penalty for -3 yards. (It happened in the end zone however so it did setup a 1st and goal from the 1).

By the way, Miami was penalized 13 times for a total of 212 yards due to pass interference calls last year. Far and away the single most penalized category. And yes it was Nolan Carroll tied for the lead with 4, but Smith had 4 as well but for fewer yards.

In the first game, the Dolphins were called for 10 penalties.

In the past 2 games, 2 penalties.  Total.

I'd say Philbin got on his guys after game 1 and made a point.  The penalties have been hugely improved this season, and most recently, the past 2 games.

Hmmm...I apparently missed a couple. Definately the 2 facemask penalties and something else...

Pappy, my numbers were for the entire team, not just the defense.

Mine should have been as well but I missed the face mask penalties because the yardage was added to the play. I must have missed one other as well someone because when I went back I found all of them.
