I was chatting on line with a buddy last night.  He is a Yankee fan.  We were chatting about a lot of things.  One thing he tossed out at me was "thank God the undefeated thing happened early this year so I didn't have to watch those clowns in Miami pop those corks.  That's so weak, get over it."  It got me thinking.

The Yankees won 27 World Series titles.  22 of those happened between the years 1978 and 1923:

1978, 1977, 1962, 1961, 1958, 1956, 1953, 1952, 1951, 1950, 1949, 1947, 1943, 1941, 1939, 1938, 1937, 1936, 1932, 1928, 1927, 1923.

In recent history, since 2000, New York has been to the World Series twice and has won it once.

The Montreal Canadiens, the team who celebrates their past maybe more than the Yankees, have 24 Stanley Cups.  16 of those came pre 1970's.  22 of those came pre 1980's.  They haven't won since 1992-1993.

The L.A. Lakers have 16 titles.  11 of those are from the 1980's or earlier.

The Boston Celtics have 17 titles.  16 of those are from the 1980's or earlier.

It's not uncommon to see a New York Yankee shirt reading "Got Rings?"  Nike made it for a while. A large number 27 on it.  Yet, 21 of those 27 were 51 years ago (if we start in the 60's).  I don't see a lot of backlash over this.  My same buddy has this shirt.  Which I pointed out.  He's my age.  So I told him he needs to cross out the "27" and change it to "7" and black out every year except 2009, 2000, 1999, 1998, 1996, 1978, and 1977.  I'll give him the two in the 70's, although he would have no clue what was going on and would have been more interested in plucking frogs out of a pond than the Yankees back then.  He countered with "what about your Red Sox and this "8 time World Champion" crap?"  I completely agreed with him.  As far as I am concerned, I only care about what I have witnessed:  2004, 2007 and 2013.  The rest is merely a black and white film for ESPN Classic to run.

A celebration of all these titles a large majority of the population was not alive to see.  People do it all the time.  Hats, shirts, etc.  Yet, every year, people come out of the woodwork to bury the Miami Dolphins when they celebrate being the only - singular - undefeated team in NFL history.

What's more pathetic?  Celebrating 27 rings you could never have possibly witnessed yourself, or being proud, year after year, of an undefeated team from a different age and time (keeping in my all of the teams I listed above also played in different ages and time).

*Maine note:  I also could care less about the Miami undefeated year.  It's an interesting note in history, however I was too young to know and understand it.  I am curious, however, about your take.

As I commonly see, your non-Dolphins fan buddy is the one who brought up the undefeated season and then complained about it. It is usually someone who isn't a fan that brings it up and it is usually to say how sick they are of hearing about it. I find it really odd.

^ This is so true.

JTex used to come on here, talk about the 72 Fins all year, and then complain how much we talked about them.

But I do think that the undefeated thing is really cool.  I also think it's really cool that we are also celebrating the '85 win against the Bears.  ...and the New England Super Bowl loss.

Especially knowing the 85 Dolphins had something to do with tripping up the 85 Bears.  Dwight Stephenson owned The Fridge that night.

What happened to Ol' Jtex anyway?  I miss his annual how the Dolphins go 0-16 thread.

Was there any players that were both on the 72 Dolphins and 85 Dolphins?

If I were a Dolphins fan, I'd rate a perfect season even higher than a ring. A team accomplishes the ring every season, but only one team has ever homesteaded in Perfectville.
