Should the Seahawks pay big money to Wilson?

The Seahawks were in a great spot this year.  They had their QB on a rookie salary agreement.  But now the time comes for renegotiation and new contracts and Wilson will probably demand pretty big money.  He did just win the Super Bowl.  Would you pay big money for him if you're the Seahawks?  Do you do the Trent Dilfer and risk letting him walk?

They will pay him and keep him. But they won't pay him before they have too. When the rookie contract ends is when they pay him, not before.

He has two years remaining on his deal.  He'll get a new contract by next offseason at the latest.

I imagine the pitch this offseason will be something like:

"You won with the top defense in the league.  We can sign you to a Ben Roethlisberger/Eli Manning contract now, or you can wait a year and depending on how we do, we will give you a Tom Brady/Aaron Rodgers contract next year."

If Wilson is smart he wouldn't take it. Play out the deal and hit free agency. So few quality QB's in this league if he is on the open market he will bring home a boatload. He shouldn't settle.

The risk of that is if you get injured you get zero.

This^^^^. Even if he gets hurt someone will pay him big time. While he does have a great defense he compliments them much better than Flacco. A very good QB is like the illusive unicorn. Who doesn't want one?

If Wilson is smart he will sign a reasonable extension.  Hitting FA is always risky AND he is on a team he is successful with.  He is a very good QB, but he is not elite.  If pre-season had  Sea traded Wilson for Brees, Romo, Rothsburger, Flacco etc. would the Seahawks won the superbowl with a different QB or would a different team have won the SB with Wilson? 

Sea is a young team.  He has good chemistry with the receivers, the OC, the HC etc.  The team has the number one defense.  Stay with SEA and he has serious chance at getting multiple rings along with all the endorsement deals etc.  Go to another team and he risks watching the playoffs from home.

I believe the current contract with the players union is that the Seahawks CAN'T renegotiate his contract for the coming season even if they wanted to.  So, Wilson will only get $700K or so for the upcoming season; he better hope he has a good junior year.

But they CAN extend that contract to lock him in.

Wilson is a decent QB, he risks being exposed as a QB who greatest talent is being lucky enough to play on a team with an outstanding defense.   He goes somewhere else and he might be as successful as Jim McMahon was in San Diego.   Wilson had as much to do with Sea winning the SB as McMahon had with the bears.  --- Some but not much.

You aren't looking at it from his point of view. Sure, he might go somewhere else and suck and/or fail....but by that time he has already cashed in and got the big payday. So for him what's the downside?

You are 100% correct they can't do anything with his contract till after next year. The bigger point is he will get paid either way. Seattle will overpay for him not to go to free agency. OR some team will overpay him when he hits free agency.  With already having a ring for Wilson now it is ONLY about the $$$$
