Record setting contract.  He just made a fortune not only for himself, but for Russell Wilson and Andrew Luck.

Wilson and Luck were going to get paid regardless of how much Newton got overpaid. FLacco's contract after the SB win guaranteed that Wilson was going to get a huge contract. The reason why he has not signed a contract with Seattle yet is because the two sides are reportedly millions of dollars apart. Seattle fans expected Wilson to be one of the highest paid QB's prior to this or Tannehill's contract.

Replacement QB's don't grow on trees. If they don't pay Cam then what do the Panthers do? Get the next Josh McCown or Brian Hoyer? Hope you get lucky in a draft? Trade a bunch of future picks to move up in Rd 1 to draft a guy who may or may not suck? Cam is a solid NFL QB who is a little immature. Not a bad player by any means. He got fair market value for what he is. Panthers can't let him walk and expect to replace him overnight.  NFL Salary cap goes up every year who ya gonna spend it on, the 3rd CB, hell no you lock up your QB's because QB's are so hard to find.

And everyone who thinks Russell Wilson is going to get paid big and some insane deal is crazy. That team wins in spite of him and don't think that GM and head coach doesn't know it. The first 3 quarters of that NFC Title game he was brutal. There is no miracle comeback in that game if Seattle has a QB who is competent and not playing like a 3rd string scrub. Sure, they should have handed the ball off to Lynch at the 1 yard line to win the Super Bowl....that doesn't excuse Wilson from throwing a bad pass and a horrible INT at the goaline.  Wilson is an average NFL QB who wins because he is a beast RB and a great defense. They don't win because of him because they ask him to do very little. He runs a very limited offense. Throw it deep, scramble and roll the pocket and have a simple 1 or 2 read throw. That's it. He is running a very basic offense. Not knocking it, but it is what it is and lets call it like it s. And when they do ask him to do more than normal (ie Last Play of the Super Bowl with the ball on the 1 throw a pass) he throws an INT that costs his team the game.  You take Wilson off Seattle and replace him with Alex Smith or Carson Palmer...guess what, that team is winning the same amount of games. They are essentially the same exact team. Wilson will get paid a fair market contract, he isn't breaking the bank and getting paid like an elite QB. Because he isn't close to being one. And that GM has the balls to let him walk as they know with how that team is built they can replace him and not drop off that much. Not many teams can say that, in fact 31 teams can't say that. THEY are the 1 team that can say it. They aren't built around a QB by any means. I don't think they will let him walk, but if he thinks he is getting Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck, or Joe Flacco money....he ain't getting close to that!! He will get Tannehill money, probably a little more but not much more. Which is nice and fair for who he is. Seattle has all the leverage in that deal.  You put Wilson on a team like Cleveland or Washington guess what, he is exposed for who he really is. A slightly above average QB who can't carry a team.

I don't think Wilson threw a "bad pass."  Any short-range pass (which is the play the coaches called) is vulnerable to a DB jumping the route.  That's just the way short passes work.

As for how much money Wilson would get... Flacco got the biggest contract in the league after winning one SB and he's clearly worse than Wilson.  Wilson will definitely get paid significantly more than Tannehill and will probably be making more money than Brady (given the kind of contract renegotiations Brady takes).

There are lots of teams with very good defenses that don't win anything because of bad QB play.  SEA doesn't even have to leave their own division to see where they would be without Wilson.

I agree with the OP.  We did get Tannehill for less than what the market is dictating.  Although him not having a winning season or leading the team to the playoffs might've had something to do with that

I like Tannehill, and I think he is vastly underrated for what he does and improving.  This being said, Cam Newton is the balls.

You had to pay Newton or lose him.  And he's a good QB with a good skill set and physical tools.  In the NFL, there are so few people that can claim this, that you have to pay him or you're irrelevant, looking for your next QB for the next 5 years.

I agree with everything you said except for the fact that he won't get paid an insane amount. He will and the reason is because Seattle won a SB. Nothing more. Unfortunately results are the only thing that matter to fans and media. Whether or not you are deserving has nothing to do with it. Win and you are praised whether you played great or not. Lose and you are nothing again regardless of how you played. Even GM's are not immune to this way of thinking. I don't think they really want to think that way, but they are almost forced into it by the media and the fans.

The negotiations up here have the two camps millions apart, with the rumored amount to be tens of millions apart. Seattle fans expect Wilson to have a massive contract, and they want him to stay more than Lynch.
