-Arthur Lynch cut by Fins and signed by the Jets

- Looks like Brandon Fields might  not win the punter job. The other punter in camp Matt Darr makes far less money and the coaches feel is an NFL punter per the Miami Herald. Right now its a toss up that Fields stays per the Miami Herald.

-Sturgis has won the kicker job unless he totally implodes the rest of the preseason other reports are saying. Franks just isn't ready to be a starting kicker in the NFL

-Anthony Johnson and CJ Mosley are fighting for 1 spot per the Herald. Johnson had 3 offsides vs Chicago but he is 10 years younger and makes less money than Mosley so the Fins want to keep Johnson if possible.

I like Fields and hope he stays.  After the 2002 debacle of missing the playoffs (partially) because of an incompetent punter, the thought of a new punter terrifies me.

agree. But if the Fins are now in the market for a Safety and still kicking around the Mathis idea....the thought of saving money, and a lot of money, with your punter might be necessary

Agreed, I would to see them keep Fields

Unless they use the savings to help offset the cost of signing Mathis.

Here is something else to consider about Fields, he is the holder. If we release Fields, Sturgis (it looks like he is going to win the battle at this point) will need a new holder.

Word from camp this morning in Carolina from the beat reporters is they are hearing if Turner/Thomas play well in these joint practices and in the preseason game Saturday the Fins would be pretty much out on Mathis and move on from that and they would turn their attention to finding depth at tackle since Albert could miss the first few games and they have no depth behind Fox at all at either tackle spot. They would like to add one more semi-dependable backup tackle to the roster.

Yeah, I didn't figure it was very likely that they would sign Mathis anyway.  And typically, I don't like the idea of overpaying for anyone in the first place.  But I might be willing to make an acception if the Fins feel that they are truly close to having the talent to not just sneak into the playoffs, but contend in the playoffs and if they feel that adding one quality Guard would make that scenario more likely.

Although with Delmas out for the year his contract drops $1 mill and opens up more salary cap room for the Fins to possibly spend on someone like Mathis. Those reports came out BEFORE the injury to Delmas. I wonder if that injury and the extra mill in cap space changes things. We will have to wait and see

I was thinking the same thing.  Although the Delmas injury was unfortunate, at least the team had the foresight to set up his contract the way they did.  And getting that money back would seemingly create more negotiating room.

Armando reported this morning the Fins are shopping for a safety via trade.

Interesting, I wonder at what position they think that they have the depth to ship someone off for a starting Safety.

WR or CB but probably would move a draft pick.

If the play of your punter is that significant you probably aren't going very far.

I am not saying the punter has no value, but I would rather have a weaker punter and and stronger WR and use the punter less.  There are better uses of cap dollars than having a top tier punter.
