Find a way to coach the kid up. Maybe you have to let a little bit of his "technique" slide and continue work on it. This is the problem with the coaching staff. They don't have any idea how to coach. You can't simply say well he doesn't do it right so he's out, you have to figure out a way to blend what he does well with what you want him to do and keep working on it. Maybe it's not perfect technique right now, so you continue to work on it and in the mean time you find a way to make use of what he does well and knows. Dolphins have LOUSY teachers.
