I wouldn't call putting up a little banner the same as throwing a parade or passing out a ring. Not quit the same level
Putting up a banner pretty clearly qualifies as "bragging."

Here is more context.

edit: In all fairness to the Colts, this is something of a tradition for them:

And if we're going to talk about pathetic banners that only remind one of failure, we can't ignore this one:

If you compare putting up a banner like that stating hey we came in 2nd place, which there is no ceremony that is just put up with no pomp and circumstance around it to THROWING A PARADE down main st of any major city where they stop traffic and the city comes to a halt or holding a ceremony to pass out actual rings and jewelry to players, I don't know what to tell ya. To most people it's not the same or even close!

I don't see the banners as bragging, it's just decorations inside a stadium.  If before a game they turned down the lights, played some over the top song and slowly removed a curtain to display the banner, that is one thing and bragging. With those banners that didn't happen and were put up on some Wednesday or Thursday in June or over the summer, took 5 minutes to put up and that was the end of it. No ceremony to display that where the fans stood and cheered and went  wild

Not sure how the Patriots banner somehow wound up in a thread about Rex Ryan and the Bills but....whatever.

Here is my take....

Going 16-0 in the regular season is pretty damn impressive, despite a fluky helmet catch.

Plenty of people like to make fun of the Bills, for their SBs.  I don't.  I think being the only team to 4peat the conference championship is pretty damn impressive.

If you hold the view that NEP 2007 season was as much a failure as the Dolphins 2007 season than I say this...Dan Marino was a horrible failure as a QB that should never have been inducted in the HOF!  No I don't really believe that about Danny.  But if the Bills are four time failures and the 2007 NEP didn't accomplish something amazing...than Dan has to be judged by the same metric.

^^^He is.  If he had won just one Superbowl, he would be considered the greatest QB of all time.  Instead, you'll be lucky to find a list where he's in the top 5.

You're the only one trying to change the subject to parades.  You originally said, "getting to the AFC Title game and losing is NOT an accomplishment you brag about," but putting up a banner (the SAME SIZE banner you put up for your division titles) clearly shows that at least one team thinks otherwise.

...except that that isn't a banner celebrating Tom Brady's 16-0 season; it's a banner celebrating the team's undefeated regular season.

You're trying to conflate individual accomplishments and performance with team accomplishments and performance.  No one saying that Tom Brady is a failure for 18-1, nor are they saying that Jim Kelly is a failure for losing 4 straight Super Bowls.  Have the Dolphins raised a banner celebrating Dan Marino's 1984 season?  If not, then your point is invalid.

And no, I don't think the 2007 NE season was as much of a failure as the 2007 MIA season.  After all, lots of teams have went 1-15, but only one has went 16-0 and then lost in the playoffs.

I brought up parades first (in passing when talking about Rex)  which you responded to. So if you didn't want to talk about "parades" or have it be part of this discussion why respond to my post??   Putting up a banner like that isn't bragging, and most level headed people would agree. You think it is bragging. I don't. Sorry, believe what ya want I really don't care.  If you just put up a banner and don't do a celebration around it or have a ceremony, that ain't bragging. That's just dressing up the stadium.

If before the first game of the year they turned off the lights prior to kickoff, played some rock music and the fans cheered as a curtain came down to reveal the banner for the first time.....THAT'S BRAGGING!!! Putting up a banner in the middle of summer that most people won't even notice when they go to the stadium in the fall or pay attention to, not bragging! Every team does it.

How the F' you derailed this thread is beyond me. Good job though

So then, to be perfectly on topic:

Rex Ryan took the Jets to two consecutive AFC title games.  At least one NFL team appears to consider that feat equivalent to winning a division title.  So by that standard, it is an accomplishment of note (particularly since the Jets have only won two division titles since the merger).

Do they pass out rings for that? Do they throw parades for that? WHO GIVES A SHIT? Getting to the AFC Title game and losing is NOT an accomplishment you brag about.

So any coach who doesn't win a Super Bowl is an utter disaster?

No. But a coach with a lifetime record under .500 and who runs his mouth and can't back it up IS an utter disaster

Dolphins won the AFC East in 1981 and 1985. Pats won it in 1986.
