Not sure the logistics of it yet; panel or maybe a weekly poll...

Years ago we used to do our own power rankings.  How interested would the board be in bringing it back this season.  We would start with pre-season ranking, probably late July.

In-put on the mathematics on compiling the data is welcome as well.

I love it.  It was one of my favorite weekly things.  I'm in.  My only issue was how it was weighed weirdly for a team that wasn't in someone's top 10.

I think the easiest way to do it is to rank teams 1-10 and you get inversely as many points as your rank.

So, best team gets 10 points, 2nd best get 9, etc.  If you are out of the top 10, you get 0 points.

Then add all of the points from all of the voters (or panel, if you choose that route) and rank best to worst.

So have:
TEAM NAME 1 - Number of Total Points
Average position, which is a formula: [11 - (total points / number of voters)]
Highest Position
Lowest Position (or unranked)

That's basically how we did it wasn't it? The biggest problem was getting everyone's votes in on Tuesday morning. I always liked the rankings we did but understood Maine's frustration from lack of participation.

It's kind of how we did it, but if I recall, teams were penalized for getting picked in the 9-10 spot over not getting picked at all.

So, if team A was ranked 7, 8, and unranked and team B was 8, 8, 9

It would show as:
TEAM A high = 7
TEAM A low = 8

and
TEAM B high = 8
TEAM B low = 9

I want team b to say "unranked".  It also screwed up the averaging, I think, but it's hard to remember.

I gave 10 points for the number one position and 0 for not being ranked when I took it over from Maine.

Team A received a 1,3 and a 4 = (10)+( 8 )+(7) = 25 points
Team B received a 2,2 and a 2 = (9)+(9)+(9) = 27 points
Team C received a 8,8 and 0 = (2)+(2)+(0) =  4 points
Team D received a 9,9 and 9 = (1)+(1)+(1) = 3 points

I would then choose the top ten as our top ten and then mention the others who received votes but didn't make the top 10.

I'll be glad to be a voter if this is a go.

CF, I think the #1 team should get 11 points under your kind of system.  (Second gets 9, minus 1 per spot from there)

I think there should be some extra weighting towards finishing first.

Another possibility would be to allot each voter a set number of points that can then be distributed in any way. Let's say I think the Browns and the Bills are really great, but pretty even, with a huge gap to the next couple of teams. Free allotment would make it possible for the points awarded to reflect this relative strength better than some fixed, but ultimately arbitrary, scoring system.

I don't see an issue with that

^ That's fine, but you wouldn't be able to do an average rank that way.  You could throw that stat out.

This is the type of thing that i"m itching to program an app to accomplish .. user authentication based on login state of the board, and we can allow people to fill out a ballot and vote for their top 10s automated scoring and averaging would work well.
