We now have a small but decent sample size for Tua. He's still our quarterback of the future and in all likelyhood we continue to build around him, drafting another offensive lineman in the first round and at least one wide receiver and running back in rounds 1-3.

But what if we did something more radical? How interested would Jacksonville be in the following trade?

QB - Tua Tagovailoa
2021 1st Round Selection (Houston)
2021 1st Round Selection (Miami)

Could the Jaguars make this deal?

I think that would be a good deal for Jax. I bet they'd do it.

They would not be interested.

It would cripple the Dolphins salary cap for 2021

How?  MIA would be paying a #1 instead of a #5, a #3, and [whatever MIA's 2021 pick is].

As for the deal itself: if LAC had HOU's pick and offered JAX this deal with Herbert, they'd take it.  But not for Tua.

Because all of Tua's signing bonus would then count against Miami's cap for 2021.  And while first round signing bonuses for top 5 picks are not what they used to be, they're still pretty hefty.

Tua's signing bonus was about $20 million.  That would mean the Dolphins would be taking at least a $15 million cap hit.  You can't afford to be taking that kind of hit for a player not on your team.

Jax wouldn't even consider it for under 4 first rounders. This is the hope they have been looking for, they aren't going to just trade down and hope Justin Fields is still there. It would take an insane haul to get the #1 pick, not going to be worth it for any team.

When the mayor of an NFL city comes out and thanks the coach of another team in a different city for accidentally winning and giving Jax the golden ticket for Lawrence...they aren't trading that for anything.
