He was driving 156 MPH.

Wasn't there another player that killed someone in a DUI (maybe ten years ago?) and continued playing in the NFL?

edit: Yeah, it was Donte Stallworth.  Killed a pedestrian while DUI, received a 30-day jail sentence and served 24 days.  Goodell suspended him for 1 year.

Who was the Dallas Cowboy player that had a DUI accident, and his teammate that was riding with him died?  What happened to him?

And his blood alcohol was more than twice the legal limit.   And he had a loaded firearm in the car (another criminal charge)

Bottom line is this.  He needs to go into counseling or lecturing about this incident.... because it destroyed a promising football career for him.

Again, I think you're seriously overestimating the consequences of this event.

I think the odds of Ruggs spending a full 24 months in prison is itself extremely low.  But even if he does, you think NFL teams won't bring in a 25-year-old first-round draft pick in 2024 because he served time for a deadly DUI?  His career is far from "destroyed."

Considering the charges against him, I doubt that he gets the minimum 24 months.  And even if he does, minimum means 24 months BEFORE he's eligible for parole.  So assuming he gets sentenced sometime soon, that is going to wipe out the rest of this season plus the next two at least.   Who knows what skills he will have left when he gets released?

Not to mention he will have to serve a suspension when he gets released from prison.

Depends on the Judge, really. Is it some heart warming Disney judge who thinks he can be redeemed or is it some 70 year old hardass who has seen this 100 times already and has had enough?

4 years...that is what Ruggs is going to get. DUI with fatality, where Ruggs was going 156 mph...or more than 3 times the speed limit. He also has a handgun stashed in the car.

The only way that Ruggs gets minimum sentencing is if the judge is also name Ruggs.

It's 20 maximum years for the DUI and death. The handgun is a whole different thing, depends on the gun laws in Nevada. Plaxico Burress did 3 years for an unregistered gun but that was NYC. Judge may look at the BAC, the MPH and the gun and just lock him up and throw away the key. It will be healdine news for 3 days and then everyone will forget.

Yeah, this is pretty much where I think this case is going to go.
There is "Fucking up"...and there is "Reeeeally fucking up." There are a whole lot of e's in reeeeally for Ruggs.

I don't get it. Whenever I'd go out with the guys, we'd have one guy DD. And he was well taken care of for the night. Anything that he wanted to eat, sodas, etc... and a few bucks too.

Registered or not, it is illegal to be in possession of a firearm while intoxicated.  That is what makes this matter all the more serious.

Were you ever 22 years old with fame and millions of dollars and no one telling you what to do? That's basically the issue at hand. Sober or not, not one of us ever drove 158 MPH because we never had a vehicle that could do that. He's just a kid who was given too much at an early age. Unfortunately for him, a Judge can see a lapse in judgement at 79 MPH. At 158 MPH? Not a chance. He was driving as fast as possible and for that I think he is going to get the book thrown at him.

Many factors, judge is only one.  The DA, Riggs willingness to plead guilty/quickly settle civil suit and the descendants wishes all play a roll.

Definitely. Since Ruggs was released, no need to go soft for fear of angering the locals and hurting your career. Depending on the political clmate at the time, might be better if he goes hard on him.

Given the BAC and speed, I see him getting ten years, maybe out in seven or eight.  It will be tough to try and restart your career in late 20's, NFL teams won't want to bother with the media (if he was a top QB it'd be a different story).  From what I have read the gun was only illegal because he was intoxicated, so it probably won't matter much given the other charges, just an added bargaining point so the DA can get him to plead without going thru a trial.  He oughta get another charge for killing the dog.
