Watching the San Francisco failure reminded me of the 2002 wild card game against the giants.  On the last play, cris collinsworth said Matt Allen should have spiked the ball after the bad snap.  However, this is intentional grounding, which is a ten yard penalty and a runoff. The giants did have a timeout left. If he had spiked the ball, could they have used the timeout to prevent the runoff?
