I would love to talk about this more in detail, but it's such an exhaustive amount of info, that I don't really know how to breach the subject.  The list is broken up by order of watch, which isn't helpful.  I wish I had the data sorted by decade or genre or something.  It's too much even for me to review.

I watched a disgusting amount of movies this year, shattering my previous record by more than double.  I saw 386 first-time watches in the calendar year of 2022.  My goal was 365 and I ended up surpassing that.  There are some things on here that might not technically be considered movies, like hour+ comedy specials, but I think they're listed as films in most places, so I included them.

My goal was 25 and I nailed it the last day of the year with The Banshees of Inisherin.

We clearly have different schedules.

We clearly have different schedules.

When I talk to people through the year, overwhelmingly, it's about having time.  But honestly, it's really not.

I'm watching down a list, for the most part, so I have the movies selected ahead of time.  I don't "flip around" and watch TV.  If I have time, I start the next movie.  And there are days, like random weekends in the off-season, where I can watch three in a day.

I get that in my case, it's excessive.  But I honestly don't believe I consume more media than the average person.  It's just not certain kinds of media.  ...no browsing TV, no rewatching my favorite things, no scrolling to find what to watch.

Maximizing the time you have is a lost skill in this country.

I wake up at 5 AM for the gym and go to sleep at 9:30 PM, so I only have movie time for weekends. I read books on my lunch breaks, but that only gets you so far. I'm reading Walden right now and this one will take awhile.

Oh yeah, I only touch my laptop on weekends. I only post here during work or every Sad Sunday. The internet turned us into time wasters.

I don't really have a list, and if I tried to get comprehensive with what I watched, I would run into an acute case of list-envy after reading Dave's Tome of Cinematic Hoopla, so here is a short list of movies I enjoyed and some I have seen recently.

Marvel/DC:

Spider-man: No Way Home
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Doctor Strange and the Multitude of Mediocrity
Venom: Let There Be Carnage
Werewolf By Night
Thor: Love And Thunder
The Batman
Black Adam
Peacemaker

__________

Avatar: The Way of Water
Top Gun: Maverick
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Bullet Train
Babylon
Jurassic World: Dominion
Amsterdam
Cyrano
Uncharted
The Gray Man
Prey
The Greatest Beer Run Ever

I don't know how you do it Dave. I probably started to watch maybe a hundred movies in the last year and I turn them off 15 mins into them. If a movie doesn't get my attention in the first 15 mins, I'm out and I go do something else. I find more often than not recently that's the case with movies. I think there are too many movies being made today. Most are not worth my time. I spend more time looking through the list of movies to watch then actually watching them. 90% of them I have no interest in them at all and so many of them have the same basic plot. I can't tell you how many times with Sci-Fi's it's either about zombies or aliens. I mean come on at least replace zombies with child abducting dogs or something different. Anything. It doesn't even have to make sense. Maybe it's dogs and cats taking over the world together. Whatever, just something other than zombies or aliens.

By the way, do you keep a spreadsheet on this? I took your list and sorted by year and title if you are interested. If you are just keeping these in a document how do you even know if you have seen it before? I can't remember half the stuff I watch unless I look it up in a list.

Some movies from 2022 that you missed that I recommend. Not all of these are great, but all of them are at least worth a watch.

The In Between
The Adam Project
All the Old Knives
Father Stu
Operation Mincemeat
Spiderhead
Where the Crawdads Sing
13 Lives
Luckiest Girl Alive
The Good Nurse
The Wonder

Babylon

I am curious about this.  The reviews have been....mixed.  But some people love it and even people who don't love still seem to think you should see it.

The Wonder

I do use a spreadsheet, yes.

I get movies from three places:

1) I'm watching through a book called 1001 movies you should watch before you die.  Much of the list comes from there.
2) I watch every film nominated for any Academy Award and there are 50+ of those.
3) I watch films I genuinely want to watch that I select just for fun or with my family or whatever.

There is also a website called letterboxd.com that allows you to checklist any movies you've seen.  That helps keep tabs.  I can't remember individual plots of a lot of these movies, particularly old, foreign ones.  They start to run together.

I also plan ahead.  I know the next movie on my list and where to watch it already set up.

I often do not like the movies, but I consider this more about education than enjoyment.  Movies can be both, but I will stick through things I hate.  It almost doesn't even matter.  And once in a while, you'll find stuff you really like, and I'm often surprised at how much I will enjoy some of these really old movies.  The 40s are great.  The 60s are not.

One thing that's also kinda cool is that you can really map influence and see where things came from.  Sometimes, there are homages from other films.  But sometimes, it's direct.
In the Shawshank Redemption, Andy asks Redd for a rock hammer, while Redd is watching a movie staring Rita Hayworth.  He says the line "I love it when she does that shit with her hair" and then later gifts Andy a poster of her.

Anyway, I just watched that movie the other day and recognized that hair flip.

I think that is the difference. You're actually watching the movie with a purpose. 9 times out of 10 when I start watching a movie, it's because I'm bored and looking for something to do and if I'm not invested in that movie 15 minutes into it, I'm turning it off because it's not fullfilling the purpose which is just to relieve the boredom.

I will sit through bad movies from time to time, but it's because I wanted to watch the movie for some reason. The last movie on your list, Bullet Train was like that. I wanted to watch it and we rented it for a trip to St. Louis, but I really didn't know what it was going to be like. I really wasn't into the movie much but I kept watching because I really didn't have anything better to do. It's not really that movie was all that bad, it's just not my type of movie. I don't really get the whole Tarrantino thing of making fun of gratuitous violence. I don't find it funny and I don't find it entertaining. I find it rather offensive honestly. The best parts of the movie were Brad Pitt talking with Sandra Bullock on the phone. Other than that. Meh.

One other thing that I just have to mention, I sort of have a "crush" on Joey King. I got laid off from my job at Southwest Airlines in March I think it was and it took a couple months to find another position so I had a lot of time on my hands this year. Since even I have a breaking point for playing video games and surfing the internet apparently, I started watching a lot of movies and I came across a movie called the Kissing Booth that stars Joey King and thought what the heck. I ended up really enjoying the movie and so I looked up Joey King and found that she did 2 more movies, the Kissing Booth 2 and 3 and I watched both of them and really enjoyed the entire series. I was hooked so then I started to look up Joey King on IMDB and realized that she has been in a couple other movies I had seen that I really liked and so I decided to start watching all of her movies and watched just about everything that looked even mildly entertaining and she's just a terrific young actress with a huge future in my opinion. Even the bad movies, she's pretty good in. Her last 2 movie choices have been sort of bad choices in my opinion, but I get why they cast her in the part. She pulled them off, but not really great movies.

Anyway long story short, if you ever watch movies just because a certain actor is in it, take a look at these movies from Joey King and remember her name. I think she's going to be a star in a very short time.

Joey King Movies I have watched this year:
Bullet Train
The Princess
The In Between
The Kissing Booth 1,2 & 3
The Lie
Summer '03
Radium Girls
Smartass
Wish I was Here

I also watched the TV series:
The Act.

She's also been in these movies which I had already seen and didn't rewatch:
The Conjuring
Oz the Great and Powerful

This in my opinion is a pretty impressive list of movies for someone who's only 23 and she's honestly terrific in all these movies even if the movie itself wasn't all that great. Maybe I just had too much time on my hands, but I really don't think so.

^^^ I had to look her up, then she had a familiar face but I couldn't place her.  Looking through her filmography I remembered her from White House Down when she was younger.
