I think this was the right move. There is too much defensive talent on this team for them to have been as bad as they were for much of the year. The only thing the Dolphins seemed to be good at was cover zero, but you can't play that way all the time, especially late in games, it's too much feast or famine. You have to be able to go to a cover 2 type of defense that most teams play to preserve a lead and Miami couldn't do it.

I'm not upset, I'm not thrilled. Just seems like something that happened. He does get the excuse that a comical amount of injuries happened to his defense and X was hurt all year, but he also didn't make any adjustments until very late in the year.

Whoever the next DC is, can't make major changes. Got a huge amount of talent coming back, we can't have such a new scheme that we need to swap out 11 players to make it worse.

I can't see how he isn't. He has the same excuse a Boyer but that didn't work for him.

He was a holdover from the last regime, so you could see it coming. With the SF connection watch us pull a uno reverse card on the jets and poach one of their top assistants for the DC spot.

I'm surprised.

I wouldn't have done it, but I'm not broken up about it.  I don't know how he and McDaniel vibed, either.

Bucs, Chargers and Dolphins all fired part of their coaching staff after making the playoffs.  Not saying this has never happened before but typically if you are on a team who makes the playoffs you are safe for next year.

That is usually the case, but Byron Leftwich's offense badly regressed and Boyer was an issue all year. The Chargers OC was holding Herbert back, so that was coming too.

If you use injuries as an excuse as to why you failed, you shouldn't be coaching in the NFL. You might be able to make that case in the NBA or something, but not in the NFL. Injuries are a part of the game. Heck we don't even really know if injury was the real reason that Jones didn't play the whole year, there's been a lot of suggestions on these forums that he could have played if he wanted to. I'm not saying that's Boyer's fault, but that's just something you deal with, happens to all teams. It's not an excuse and it won't protect your job.

I feel the same way. Injuries were definitely an issue this year - between Byron Jones' absence and X's hamstring, we've had to play more zone and less man coverage this year, which is basically Boyer's DNA for this group. With that in mind, it's no surprise we dropped statistically that side of the ball. At least he went out on a high note, with a classic "throw everything and the kitchen sink" game against the Bills.

It will be interesting to see who they bring in and how it works out next year - this could really spark the defensive group, or they could rebel against a new coach and scheme and it all blows up.

Shouldn't Crossman be gone also?

That was my first thought too. If we're shit-canning Boyer for the defense's output this year, I thought the Special Team's coach would have been ahead of him in the firing line. That bunch had way too many downright awful and embarrassing moments.

It's hilarious that this has become the national narrative excuse for Herbert.

I was happy that Miami had kept on Boyer after Flores was fired, since the defensive play was so strong.  But he clearly was in over his head in spite of the injuries.

It's hilarious that this has become the national narrative excuse for Herbert.

The stats people cite are that Herbert doesn't throw downfield a lot depsite his arm strength. Lots of safe throws. Whether that means he will now be averaging 5,500 yards a year remains to be seen.
