F*ck

One year deal worth up to $9 million according to some random source on twitter.

This quite honestly makes me feel nauseous

Not the best spot for him but he probably felt comfortable in the AFC East and with Bill O'Brien again.

We better hope Mac Jones is a true bust, we don't need another division contender.

Poor guy got screwed last year but you’d have to think GMs would know that. He was getting low balled so took a one year deal and will make less than he did last year. Here’s to hoping he balls out and signs a big contract elsewhere the following season.

If the best deal he could get was a 1-year deal making sub-top-10 money, and the only team willing to give that deal was a division rival who has lost to him repeatedly, it seems like the Dolphins were justified in letting him go.

It's a bit of a strange one - a one year deal with less than half guaranteed seems a stop-gap for either a large extension during the year, or a potential move to somewhere else who can't fit him in right now. Good luck to him anyway.

We gotta hope we smother Jones enough to not get the ball out, because we have a continuing history of not being able to cover players like him. That said it could have been worse - he could have gone to the Bills, or the Jets with Rodgers slinging the ball.

I disagree. The Dolphins drove down his value by not using him last year, it wasn't because he wasn't capable.  As long as he doesn't get injured he's going to get a huge contract from some team after this year because the Patriots will be throwing to him all the time; they know how to use tight ends.  Glad for him he deserves it, but I can see the Dolphins losing a game to the Patsies because of this trade.

They didn't use him because they couldn't use him.  He had little value in the Dolphins' system.

IMO Great coaches design game plans to fit their players.  Shula or Bellichek over time changed their offense depending on what players' strengths were.  They certainly COULD have made some adjustments to use Gesicki but they chose not to.  I'm perplexed as to why they even kept him last season with no plans to use him.

My gut is that before they got Hill they had planned on making Gesicki a featured player, but then everything changed once they acquired Hill. Gesicki was out and Hill was in.

No way we sign Cedric Wilson if we already had Hill. It was something that fell into our laps and we were still better off for it.

IIRC, Gesicki has never been able to get separation and has always lived-or-died on winning contested balls.  The problem is that he wasn't winning them, which made his value in MIA's system marginal.

A TE that can't block, can't get separation, and also isn't a reliable safety blanket just isn't valuable to the current version of the Dolphins.  It remains to be seen whether he will be valuable somewhere else.

I think McD had hopes Gesicki would be able to get separation with coaching.  Remember the interview with Andrew Hawkins where he said McDaniel had some foolproof strategy for getting a release on every single snap?

Playing against mostly defensive backs? Not sure why anyone would think that Gesicki is gonna get seperation from a defensive back. He might get some seperation from some linebackers, but even that's not Gesicki's forte. On the flip side he has tremendous hands so any QB with good accuracy ought to be able to hit him in stride in his hands for a completion and some yards after the catch, but he barely made it onto the field and when he did he was barely targetted by Tua who favored throwing to guys that were able to seperate. If Hill and Waddle weren't the Dolphins WR's then Gesicki would have had a lot more chances, but that's not what happened. That's fine that it worked out that way, but that's not Gesicki's fault. It's just a good thing that Brady isn't with New England anymore because I'm pretty sure that Brady would have found a way to utilize Gesicki's ability.

I don't know that Gesicki has "tremendous hands."  My general recollection from last year was that when his number was called in high leverage situations, he usually came up short (with the notable exception of the TD grab against BAL).

Again, a TE that cannot block had better either a) be able to get separation or b) be able to consistently win contested balls.  Gesicki simply was not that player.

Well Bill Belichick disagrees at least. I guess we will find out if the Patriots are better able to utilize him than the Dolphins.

"Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has described him as someone who’s hard to cover, has very good hands, and has enough quickness to separate."

And yeah I realize that Belichick likes to play up the competition, but there's always some genuine thoughts in there.
