IMO Great coaches design game plans to fit their players. IIRC, Gesicki has never been able to get separation and has always lived-or-died on winning contested balls. The problem is that he wasn't winning them, which made his value in MIA's system marginal. A TE that can't block, can't get separation, and also isn't a reliable safety blanket just isn't valuable to the current version of the Dolphins. It remains to be seen whether he will be valuable somewhere else. I'm perplexed as to why they even kept him last season with no plans to use him. I think McD had hopes Gesicki would be able to get separation with coaching. Remember the interview with Andrew Hawkins where he said McDaniel had some foolproof strategy for getting a release on every single snap?
