RIP

He was quick on the bases; always had to pay attention when watching games once he got on first.

He's on my Padres' Mount Rushmore, right there with Tony Gwynn, Dave Winfield and Trevor Hoffman.

RIP, Rickey

I didn't realize that he played for so many teams. I had quit paying attention to baseball before he retired.

If he reached first, it was a forgone conclusion that he would steal second and third.   There are guys in baseball who are suited to that role but he was the best there ever was at it.

I know great base stealer Tim Raines and his family so it kind of led to following Rickey Henderson to watch how they compared. That guy was as durable as there has ever been. He was special. RIP Mr Henderson!

You know Tim Raines?  You didn't, by chance, attend Seminole High in Sanford did you?

Tim is close to my oldest brothers age but I know much of his family as well. His father and Uncle worked with my father the whole time I was growing up and didn't live too far away from us. He and his brothers played ball with my older brothers growing up and I played softball with and against them all throughout my 20s. Tim sponsored the team and would play with us during the offseason. It was called "TRC" for Tim Raines Connection.

World Series MVP David Eckstein is from Sanford too and I know his family as well. His oldest brother was in my class and his sisters aren't much younger. His brother Ricky played softball with us. In fact we did a cruise with one of the sisters a few years ago. His father was my favorite teacher of all time. First teacher to call me out on my BS and hold me accountable.

Funny thing is, they're rivals of ours.  I went to Deland High.   Class of '86.  I knew a guy named Luke Scott who grew up close by.  He played in the majors for several years.   His dad and my dad went deer hunting together a lot and would often bring us along.
