THE ASSCLOWN AWARD

« on: January 06, 2025, 12:39:21 am »

1) Do you think the Broncos-Chiefs game had any effect on the Dolphins?  The Dolphins outscored the Jets 6-0 early in the game.  However, when it became clear that the Chiefs' backups were not going to offer any fight, the quality of play sharply declined.  I think if this was a win and you're in game, I think Miami would have won.

2) What about Tyreek Hill?  First off, if he pulled himself from the game, kudos to him.  It was meaningless at that point.  It's better for him to not risk injury so his next season will be good.  Secondly, he really let us down this year.  He wasn't anything like what he was in 2022 and 2023.  Thirdly, if Miami trades him, how much money does he account for our cap?  Also, would they get good players for him?  That 2019 rebuild year proves Miami can't do much with draft picks.

1 --> Maybe a bit, but the offense doesn't work at all with Huntley behind center. The great stats last week were obviously a mirage (and actual play wasn't nearly as good - the offense was still a mess) against the worst defense in the league. I really doubt the team could have pulled out a win if they needed to.

2 --> I don't blame Hill for this season and I don't agree that he let us down. As for trading him (which I sincerely hope we don't even consider), we would avoid paying him $27.65 million for the season, but would be on the hook for all the prorated stuff, which would cost us $28 million on the cap next year (or split across two years depending on the timing of the trade).

I saw something very similar in regard to the potential cap consequences of a trade:

"If he were traded before June 1, the Dolphins would have $28.3 million in dead money, just a little higher than his 2025 salary cap number of $27.7 million. A post June 1 trade would give the Dolphins just under $15 million in cap savings in 2025, but would move additional dead money in 2026."

So we're still up for an almighty cap hit in 2025 even if we do trade him, and that's deadly given that we're already in extremely poor shape.

Interesting - this could save us some cash, but it could also lead to a very messy, noisy dispute:

"Tyreek Hill's apparent refusal to play could trigger a contract showdown in Miami, with millions in guarantees potentially voided and millions in previously paid bonuses potentially forfeited."

1) I don't think the Bronco's/Chiefs game affected Miami until later in the 3rd quarter when it was obvious Denver would win, Then their seemed to be a let down on defense.

2) IMO Hill never seemed to put in the same effort if Tua wasn't in there looking to throw him the ball every play.  That said can't blame the poor season on him.

Some more details about our cap scenarios and what we could get from a potential Tyreek trade:

https://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2025/1/6/24336973/a-tyreek-hill-trade-would-be-limited-by-his-contract-details

My gut feel is if we do it, we should aim for a pre-June first trade and be prepared to wear the approx $28M on the cap next year, which would keep the rest off the books from 2026 onward. If the team does completely blow up after next season, it should be a step to give the new GM and HC plenty of cap room to start over.

1) Yes.  These are still people and subject to bad vibes.  And Hill, the best receiver in the league, arguably, refused to play in the 2nd half.  That doesn't happen if Denver loses that other game.

2) I don't know about Tyreek's cap hit, but I find him leaving to be unlikely.  I just think there's too much tied up in him -- no other team wants to pay it with picks and the cap hit -- and he gets all his signing bonuses and stuff if he stays, whereas we probably dispute that stuff if he leaves.  Sometimes things are beyond repair and both sides lose out, but it doesn't sound like this is the case yet.  Tyreek is impetuous, egomaniacal, and impulsive.  He just spouted off and now he'll have to walk it back.

Tyreek is the latest in a line of receivers that became divas later in their careers.  The list includes Keyshawn Johnson, Terrell Owens, Chad Johnson, Brandon Marshall, Antonio Brown and others.
